Old Town Market Square in Toruń

The Old Town Market Square in Toruń (pronounced roughly "TOR-oon") is the heart of one of Europe's best-preserved medieval towns and the natural first stop on any visit. In the middle stands the brick Gothic Old Town Hall with a 40-meter viewing tower; around it you'll find merchants' houses, the Artus Court, a Baroque church and the statue of Nicolaus Copernicus, who was born a few streets away. Where Toruń is and how to get there

Toruń sits on the Vistula River in north-central Poland, roughly halfway between Warsaw and Gdańsk. Direct trains from Warsaw take about 2–3 hours (around 185 km by rail); by car Gdańsk is about 170 km away via the A1 motorway, roughly 1.5–2 hours. The nearest airport is Bydgoszcz, about 50 km west, with trains and buses between the two cities taking around an hour. Get off at Toruń Miasto station for a short walk into the Old Town; Toruń Główny, the main station, is on the opposite bank, so take a city bus or tram across the bridge.

Why this square matters

The Old Town was chartered in 1233 and the present square was laid out around 1251. It measures about 109 × 104 m and served for centuries as a marketplace, with cloth halls and bread stalls gradually growing into the town hall in the middle. Toruń was a prosperous Hanseatic trading city, and in 1997 its medieval center — the Old and New Towns plus the ruins of the Teutonic Knights' castle — was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Unlike Warsaw or Gdańsk, Toruń came through World War II largely intact, so the Gothic brickwork you see is genuinely old.

The Old Town Hall and its tower

The Gothic town hall took its present form at the end of the 14th century. In 1602–1603 the Flemish architect Antoni van Obberghen added an extra floor and ornate gables. King John I Albert of Poland died here in 1501, and in 1645 the building hosted the Colloquium Charitativum, an attempt to reconcile Catholics and Protestants. A fire during the Swedish bombardment of 1703 gutted the roofs, which is why the tower still lacks its old spire.

Local legend says the building follows a calendar: one tower for the year, four gates for the seasons, twelve halls for the months. Today it houses the main branch of the District Museum in Toruń, with Gothic art, local crafts and Polish painting. Climb the 40 m tower for the best view over the red roofs and the Vistula.

• Copernicus Monument (1853), cast in the Berlin workshop of sculptor Friedrich Tieck, in front of the town hall. The Latin inscription praises the native son who "moved the Earth and stopped the Sun."
• Artus Court (No. 6), opened in 1891 on the site of the medieval guild hall where the Second Peace of Thorn was signed on 19 October 1466, ending the Thirteen Years' War between Poland and the Teutonic Order.
• House Under the Star (No. 35), a lavish Baroque façade on a Gothic house, now the Museum of Asian Art.
• Church of the Holy Spirit (No. 14), consecrated in 1756 as a Lutheran church and run by the Jesuits since 1945.
• The Raftsman Fountain (1914): legend says a raftsman named Iwo led a plague of frogs out of town with his violin. Touch one of the eight bronze frogs and make a wish.
• Filuś the dog, just off the northeast corner on Chełmińska Street — a 2005 bronze by Zbigniew Mikielewicz of the cartoon dog of Professor Filutek, created by Toruń-born artist Zbigniew Lengren. He holds his master's bowler hat in his mouth.

How to visit and is it worth it

Absolutely — the square is free and open around the clock. Allow 30–45 minutes to walk the four sides, or 2–3 hours if you add the museum and tower. Go early in the morning to beat tour groups, or after dark when the floodlit town hall glows. The cobblestones are flat but bumpy for strollers, and the tower is stairs-only. In early October the square hosts the Gingerbread Festival (2–11 October in 2026) — Toruń's spiced gingerbread, pierniki, is the souvenir to bring home. Prices are in Polish złoty (PLN); cards are widely accepted. Museum labels and the official website have English versions.

• Town Hall exhibitions: October 1 – April 30, Tuesday–Sunday 10 am–4 pm; closed Mondays. Tickets PLN 30, reduced PLN 25. Permanent exhibitions are free on Wednesdays.
• Town Hall tower: daily, October 10 am–6 pm, November–March 10 am–4 pm. Tickets PLN 28, reduced PLN 24.
• Closed on public holidays including November 1, December 24–25 and 31, and January 1. Check the museum website before you go.
• The Old Town is a restricted traffic zone; park outside the walls and walk in.

Nearby

Within five minutes you can reach the House of Copernicus, the Leaning Tower, the Gothic Cathedral of St. John and the riverside Philadelphia Boulevard. The quieter New Town Market Square is about 500 m east, and the classic postcard view of the skyline is from the Majdany viewpoint across the river.

Christmas market 2026

Toruń's Christmas market opens on 20 November 2026. The organiser gives two closing dates, 20 December 2026 and 10 January 2027, so check before you travel.
