Toruń, Kuyavian-Pomeranian
St. Mary's Church in Toruń, properly the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a vast Gothic former Franciscan church on the north-west corner of the Old Town Square. It has no tower at all, yet inside it opens into a hall almost 30 meters high, with 14th-century wall paintings, carved oak choir stalls and the Baroque mausoleum of a Swedish-Polish princess. It is one of the most rewarding stops in Toruń's UNESCO-listed Old Town, and usually quieter than the cathedral.
Toruń lies on the Vistula River in north-central Poland, a little over two hours from Warsaw by Intercity train and about 180 km from Gdańsk via the A1 motorway. The church stands right off the Old Town Square, a short walk from the Old Town Hall; from Toruń Miasto station it is roughly a 15-minute walk.
Franciscan friars arrived in Toruń in 1239, only a few years after the town was founded. The present church, at least the third on the site, was built in the second half of the 14th century. Following the order's rule of simplicity, it was given no tower; the gable facing the square ends instead in three slender turrets.
From 1557 the church belonged to the Protestants and for almost two centuries was the main Lutheran church of Toruń. In 1636 it hosted the funeral of Princess Anna Vasa, sister of King Sigismund III. After the religious unrest known as the Tumult of Toruń, it returned to Catholic hands in 1724 and was run by Bernardine friars until 1821. The adjoining monastery was demolished in the early 19th century, and the church has served as a parish church since around 1830. In 2001 it was made a sanctuary and given a second patron, Blessed Stefan Wincenty Frelichowski.
The three-aisled hall rises to about 27 m. Look out for:
Yes, especially if you enjoy medieval interiors without the crowds. Allow 20 to 40 minutes. It is an active parish church, so avoid Mass times and keep your voice down. The interior can be cold in winter, so keep your coat on.
Across the square stand the Old Town Hall, with its viewing tower, and the Copernicus Monument. St. John's Cathedral is a few minutes' walk away, and Szeroka Street leads east to the New Town Square and St. James' Church.
