Toruń, Kuyavian-Pomeranian
The Old Town Hall in Toruń (pronounced roughly "TOR-oon") is the Gothic heart of one of Poland's best-preserved medieval cities, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. For centuries this single brick building housed the city council, the court and the merchants' trade. Today it is the main branch of the Toruń Regional Museum, with medieval stained glass, a royal portrait gallery and a 40-meter tower you can climb for the finest view over the Old Town and the Vistula River.
Toruń lies in north-central Poland, in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian region, on the banks of the Vistula. Intercity trains from Warsaw usually take a little over 2 hours (up to about 3 hours on slower services); from Gdańsk the drive is about 180 km (roughly two hours on the A1 motorway), while the train takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. The nearest airport is Bydgoszcz, a short drive west. Toruń has two stations: Toruń Miasto, a short walk from the Old Town, and Toruń Główny, the main station on the opposite bank of the river, connected to the center by bus and tram.
Merchants' halls and stalls stood on this spot as early as the 13th century, and a privilege of 1274 allowed a tower to be built. The four-wing Gothic hall you see today, wrapped around an inner courtyard, went up mostly in the 1390s; the older tower was raised and absorbed into the new building. The footprint measures about 43.7 by 52.4 meters.
The building combined government, justice and commerce under one roof, and it hosted the diets of Royal Prussia and visiting Polish kings. King John I Albert (Jan Olbracht) died here on June 17, 1501; his heart is buried in nearby St. John's Cathedral. Around 1602–1605 the Flemish architect Anthony van Obberghen remodeled the hall in a Mannerist style, adding a story while keeping its Gothic spirit. In 1645 it hosted the Colloquium Charitativum, a rare attempt to reconcile Catholics and Protestants. During the Swedish siege of 1703 fire destroyed the roofs and upper interiors; the tower lost its spire for good, and scorched bricks are still visible today.
Locals like to say the building was designed as a calendar: one tower for the year, four gates for the seasons, twelve halls for the months and as many windows as days in the year. It is a legend, but a fun one to test as you walk around.
The Regional Museum fills the historic rooms with several permanent exhibitions:
Stairs (no elevator) lead to a viewing terrace near the top of the 40-meter tower. From there you look straight down on the market square, across the red roofs to St. John's Cathedral and St. Mary's Church, and over the wide Vistula valley. In winter the tower closes at 4 p.m., so plan an early-afternoon climb if you want low winter light.
Yes, if you only have one day in Toruń, this is the place to start: it explains the city's Hanseatic wealth and its ties to the Polish crown. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the exhibitions and around 30 minutes for the tower. Kids usually enjoy the climb and the coins; the Gothic art suits older children and adults. If you are visiting with a stroller or limited mobility, contact the museum in advance, as the tower is stairs only.
The museum's English-language services are not detailed on its website; check at the ticket desk.
The Old and New Towns lie in a paid parking zone (Monday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–6 p.m.), with guarded car parks around the historic center. The city also recommends its Park&Ride car parks on Olimpijska and Dziewulskiego streets, linked to the center by tram and bus.
Right outside the east façade stands the Copernicus Monument. A few steps away are St. Mary's Church and St. John's Cathedral, where Copernicus was baptized. Walk down Żeglarska Street to the river to see the medieval city walls, the Leaning Tower and the ruins of the Teutonic Castle.
