Museums
Bydgoszcz, Kuyavian-Pomeranian
Exploseum in Bydgoszcz is a museum set inside the ruins of DAG Fabrik Bromberg, a vast Nazi German explosives factory hidden in a pine forest on the edge of the city. You walk through concrete halls where nitroglycerin was produced during World War II and descend into the tunnels that once carried pipelines and escape routes. It is one of the most unusual things to do in Bydgoszcz and an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
Bydgoszcz (say "bid-GOSH-ch") is a city in north-central Poland, about three hours from Warsaw by intercity train and about two hours from Gdańsk. The UNESCO-listed old town of Toruń is less than an hour away, so many visitors combine the two.
Exploseum lies at Alfreda Nobla 1, about 6 km (4 miles) southeast of the Old Town, on the edge of the Bydgoszcz Industrial and Technology Park. By car or taxi it takes roughly 15 minutes, and there is parking next to the ticket building. A city bus stops at "Park Przemysłowy / Exploseum," but service is infrequent, so check the current route and timetable in a journey planner before you set out.
In fall 1939, weeks after Germany occupied Bydgoszcz (then known in German as Bromberg), work began on fencing off a forested area of 23 square kilometers (about 9 square miles). Dynamit Aktien-Gesellschaft, a company rooted in Alfred Nobel's business, built one of the Third Reich's largest arms plants in occupied Poland here. By the end of 1944 the site had more than 1,000 buildings, around 400 km of roads and 40 km of railroad track. Its western part made nitrocellulose, smokeless powder and nitroglycerin; the eastern part produced TNT and ammunition.
An estimated 30,000–40,000 people passed through the plant, about 10,000 of them directly in production. More than half were Poles; the rest were Germans and prisoners of war from over a dozen countries, and forced laborers lived in barrack camps on site. Production continued almost until the Red Army arrived, after which Soviet troops shipped the machinery to the USSR.
The regional museum adapted eight buildings of the former nitroglycerin zone between 2008 and 2011, with substantial EU funding, and opened Exploseum on July 7, 2011. The exhibition won Poland's Sybilla museum award for 2011.
The main route connects seven exhibition buildings (about 1,820 m²) through tunnels on several levels. Themes include:
Look out for the blast-proof design: light "blow-out" walls meant to vent an explosion, earth embankments, non-sparking lead floors and tunnels whose exits never face each other. Since 2020 a separate forest trail loops around the buildings, showing camouflage and escape corridors.
Allow about two hours for the full permanent exhibition. The museum states that visits take place only during opening hours and under the supervision of trained museum guides, but it does not publish fixed start times for individual visitors, so it is wise to call ahead (+48 52 585 97 41). Guided tours in English are available for an extra fee and should be booked. Extra routes, the outdoor "alternative route" and the "extreme route," run only with a guide and by reservation.
The tunnels are cool even in summer, so bring a layer and sturdy shoes. Wheelchair users should arrange their visit in advance; the building has a stair-climbing device. The subject matter is serious, but the multimedia presentation works well for teenagers.
Absolutely, if you are interested in World War II, industrial history or atmospheric abandoned places. It is far less crowded than the big wartime sites in southern Poland and gives a very different angle on the war: the industrial machine and the people forced to run it. It works in any season.
