The Brda River Boulevards (Bulwary nad Brdą) in Bydgoszcz are a riverside promenade of about 5 km (3 miles) running through the heart of the city. Along the way you pass half-timbered granaries, Mill Island, the Opera Nova and the famous statue of a man balancing on a tightrope above the water, before the path continues east along green, tree-lined banks. It is free, flat and the easiest way to see most of central Bydgoszcz in one walk.
Bydgoszcz (roughly "bid-GOSH-ch") sits in north-central Poland, about three hours from Warsaw and two hours from Gdańsk by train. The boulevards start right by the Old Town: join them at Rybi Rynek (Fish Market) or Stary Port, or near the Solidarności bridges by the City Lock. From Bydgoszcz Główna railway station it is about a 20-minute walk, or take a tram toward Plac Teatralny. Drivers should use the paid parking lots around the Old Town.
The riverbanks are the oldest park area in the city. Bernardine friars laid out a garden here in 1601–1604, and for centuries towpaths ran along both banks, used to haul barges, especially busy in the 19th century, when Bydgoszcz (then Prussian Bromberg) developed into a major inland waterway hub. The promenade on the left bank was laid out in stages between 1914 and 1925 and again in 1936, and several sections have been rebuilt in recent years.
The showpiece section runs from the Solidarności bridges to the Bernardyński bridge:
East of the Bernardyński bridge, roughly 2 km of green boulevards follow both banks, with rowing club boathouses on the south side and quieter lawns near the Esperanto footbridge.
Allow about an hour for the Old Town stretch and 1–2 hours for the whole route. Paths are paved and stroller- and bike-friendly. Spring through fall is the best time, and evenings are lovely when the granaries are lit up. Since 2025, parts of the eastern section have been under reconstruction, so expect possible detours there.
Yes. If you only have half a day in Bydgoszcz, a walk along the boulevards is the best introduction to the city. Continue west from the City Lock to the tree-lined park along the historic Bydgoszcz Canal if you want a longer walk.
