Landmarks
Bydgoszcz, Kuyavian-Pomeranian
The Granaries on the Brda River (Spichrze nad Brdą) are the classic postcard view of Bydgoszcz (say "BID-gosh-ch"): three half-timbered grain warehouses with steep red roofs, standing right at the water's edge on Grodzka Street. They recall the centuries when the city made its money shipping grain downriver to Gdańsk. Today they house the city history branch of the Leon Wyczółkowski District Museum, and they belong on any list of things to do in Bydgoszcz.
Bydgoszcz is a city of about 320,000 people in north-central Poland, the capital of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian region. It's roughly 2 hours by train south of Gdańsk and around 2.5–3.5 hours from Warsaw, depending on the service. Bydgoszcz Airport is only about 3.5 km from the center. The granaries stand on the Brda River in the Old Town, about 200 m from the Old Market Square.
The buildings date from the late 18th and early 19th century, when five timber-framed granaries lined this stretch of the river. Grain was loaded here onto barges bound for Gdańsk and the Baltic. After the Bydgoszcz Canal opened in 1774, linking the Vistula and Oder river systems, boats could also head west toward Berlin. Under Prussian rule (1772–1920) the city was known as Bromberg.
A fire in February 1960 destroyed the two outer granaries. The surviving three were converted by 1964, and two of them became museum space. The third was renovated in 1993–2002 and later added to the museum complex.
As of October 2026 the museum lists:
Exhibitions change, and we could not confirm English labeling, so check the museum website before you go. The building has an elevator.
As of October 2026 (museum schedule valid since February 1, 2025):

Yes, at least from the outside: this is the image most Poles associate with Bydgoszcz, and it takes just minutes to see. The best view is from the opposite bank of the Brda, especially after dark when the facades are lit. Allow about an hour for the exhibitions. Water trams stop at the nearby Fish Market (Rybi Rynek) in season, but they do not run in winter (from October 12, 2026 until spring).
The address is Grodzka 7–11. From Bydgoszcz Główna station it's about 2 km to the Old Town, easy by tram or on foot. Parking in the center is paid and limited, so drivers should leave the car outside the old core.
Nearby, all within a 10-minute walk: the Old Market Square, the Gothic cathedral, Mill Island with the Rother Mills, the Opera Nova and the "Man Crossing the River" sculpture balanced on a wire above the Brda.
