Bydgoszcz, Kuyavian-Pomeranian
The Cathedral of Sts. Martin and Nicholas (Katedra św. Marcina i Mikołaja) is the oldest surviving building in Bydgoszcz, Poland – a Gothic brick parish church on the Brda River, just steps from the Old Market Square. Plain on the outside, it bursts with color inside thanks to a 1920s modernist painted interior. The high altar holds the revered late-Gothic painting of the Madonna with a Rose. It has been the seat of the Diocese of Bydgoszcz since 2004.
Bydgoszcz is a city of about 320,000 in north-central Poland, about 2 hours by train from Gdańsk and 2.5–3.5 hours from Warsaw. The cathedral stands at Farna 2, about 100 m north of the Old Market Square.
The parish was founded in 1346, the same year as the town, and the first church went up by 1364. After a fire in 1425, a new church was built; it was in use by 1466 and completed around 1502. The result is a three-aisled brick Gothic hall about 52 m (170 ft) long. Two bells in the tower came from Kamianets-Podilskyi (in today's Ukraine), cast in 1641 and 1737.
During World War II, on January 9, 1940, the German occupiers handed the church over to German worshipers and barred Poles from entering. The Madonna painting was taken away for safekeeping in 1943 and returned in September 1945. Pope John Paul II made the church a cathedral on March 25, 2004.
Yes, especially for the interior, which few visitors expect from the sober exterior. Allow 20–30 minutes. Entry is free. This is a working church: visit outside Mass times and dress and behave respectfully. We couldn't confirm official visiting hours, so check locally. For the best photo of the exterior, walk to Mill Island or the weir on the river at sunset.
From Bydgoszcz Główna station it's about 2 km to the Old Town by tram or on foot. The streets around the cathedral have restricted traffic and paid parking, so come on foot.
Nearby: the Old Market Square, Mill Island with the Rother Mills, the White Granary archaeology museum, the riverside granaries and the Opera Nova – all within a short walk.
