The Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz, Poland, is the city's opera house on the Brda River, instantly recognizable by its three white drum-shaped "circles." Its construction famously dragged on for more than 34 years, and today it's one of Poland's notable music venues and home of the annual Bydgoszcz Opera Festival. Even without a ticket, a walk around the building and along the river is one of the nicest things to do in Bydgoszcz.
Bydgoszcz is a city of about 320,000 in north-central Poland, about 2 hours by train from Gdańsk and 2.5–3.5 hours from Warsaw; the airport is only about 3.5 km from downtown. The opera stands at Marszałka Focha 5, about 300 m from the Old Market Square, facing Mill Island.
The company dates back to 1956 (its first premiere was on September 21 that year). Architect Józef Chmiel won a national design competition in 1961, and Andrzej Prusiewicz joined the project in 1971. Construction began in 1973 and repeatedly stalled in Poland's difficult economic years.
The company didn't wait: in 1994 it staged the first Bydgoszcz Opera Festival inside the unfinished building, and the festival has been held every year since. The building was formally handed over on October 21, 2006, the company's 50th anniversary.
The program mixes opera, ballet, musicals and concerts. Fall and winter 2026 include Szymanowski's "King Roger," "Don Pasquale," "Cavalleria rusticana" with "Pagliacci," "The Nutcracker" and "Lucia di Lammermoor." Check the official site for dates; we found no regular guided building tours.
The original design had a fourth circle that was never built. A contract for it was signed in January 2023; it will hold a chamber hall for about 500 people and exhibition space, with an underground parking garage beneath the square in front. The project is behind schedule and still under construction as of October 2026, so expect some building works around the site.
Prices depend on the show and seat; you can book online. Box office hours as of October 2026: Mon and Fri 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m. plus an hour before performances; Tue–Thu 8:30 a.m.–7 p.m.; Sat 3–7 p.m.; Sun 4–6 p.m. Phone: +48 52 325 15 55. Tickets are priced in PLN.
For opera and ballet lovers, absolutely – the house has a large, modern auditorium and a full season from fall to spring. For everyone else, the building is a landmark worth a 15-minute look on a walk around Mill Island. From Bydgoszcz Główna station it's about 1.5–2 km by tram or on foot.
