Bydgoszcz, Kuyavian-Pomeranian
Townhouses, rear wings and former small factories rising straight out of the Młynówka river opposite Mill Island – this is Bydgoszcz Venice, one of the best-known views of Bydgoszcz. This group of old-town buildings forms the southern and western frontage around the Młynówka and the island, and for more than a century it has appeared on postcards and in paintings. It is not a museum or a closed site but a living part of the city, best seen from the opposite bank or from the deck of a boat.
At the start of the 19th century there were only a few buildings on the steep bank, and the land by the river was used for gardens. The turning point came around 1870, when a masonry footing on wooden piles was built, allowing houses to rise directly above the water. By 1873 the street frontage was continuous, and rear wings began to reach down to the edge of the Młynówka.
By the late 19th century Bydgoszcz Venice was both residential and industrial. The townhouses belonged mostly to merchants, less often to craftsmen and factory owners, and their back yards held packaging and cigarette factories, bakeries, printing works (including that of the newspaper Dziennik Bydgoski), dye works – from 1893 the large dye works of Wilhelm Kopp – and August Franke's spirit refinery. From 1925 to 1939 the "Lukullus" chocolate and confectionery factory operated here.
The buildings belong to Przyrzecze, Długa, Wełniany Rynek, Poznańska, Świętej Trójcy and Czartoryskiego streets and fall into three parts:
Along the houses runs the Venetian Boulevard, built in 2002 – a narrow cobbled promenade with ornamental metal railings, squeezed between the walls and the river. Some houses have been restored, others – especially around Poznańska and Wełniany Rynek – still await renovation, and a few are in poor condition. They are private buildings, so you view them from outside.
Bydgoszcz Venice has appeared on screen. In 1970, in episode 16 of the cult Polish war series "Four Tank-Men and a Dog", the character Tomasz Czereśniak swims from Mill Island towards Venice and hides in a German truck on Świętej Trójcy street. In 2006 one of the townhouses became the family flat in Andrzej Maleszka's children's film "The Magic Tree". A wooden gallery house on Przyrzecze, famous from postcards, stood from 1873 to 1990.
The best view of the frontage is from the paths of Mill Island across the Młynówka – access is free and open around the clock, and a walk along the water takes about 20 minutes. The façades reflect best on a calm, windless day. To see Venice from the water, take the electric boat Słonecznik on the Old Town route (departing from Rybi Rynek, about 60–70 minutes); the 2026 cruise season runs until 18 October. The island itself, about 6.5 ha in size, has several museums, and Opera Nova is right next door.
Przestrzeń publiczna, dostępna całodobowo (kamienice prywatne – oglądanie z zewnątrz).
