Old Market Square

The Old Market Square (Stary Rynek, "STAH-rih RIN-ek") in Bydgoszcz, Poland, is the heart of the medieval town founded in 1346 – a rectangular square of about 100 × 125 m (330 × 410 ft) framed by colorful townhouses, the town hall in a former Jesuit college and plenty of café terraces. Since a 2018–2019 makeover it's fully pedestrian, and the cathedral, Mill Island and the riverside granaries are all a few steps away. It's the natural starting point for things to do in Bydgoszcz.

Where it is

Bydgoszcz is a city of about 320,000 in north-central Poland, about 2 hours by train from Gdańsk and 2.5–3.5 hours from Warsaw; the airport is just 3.5 km from downtown. The square sits in the Old Town, close to the Brda River.

A short history

King Casimir the Great granted the town its charter in 1346, and the square was laid out as its center; it was partly paved in 1604. Excavations in 2010 and 2016 uncovered foundations of the Gothic town hall and traces of settlement older than the town itself.

The darkest chapter came with World War II. Between January 18 and March 27, 1940, the German occupiers demolished the entire western side of the square, including the Jesuit church. In 1969 the Monument to the Struggle and Martyrdom of the Bydgoszcz Region was erected on the site. Calls to rebuild the lost western frontage continue, but no reconstruction has been decided.

• Town Hall – housed in the former Jesuit college completed in 1653,
• Monument to the Struggle and Martyrdom – a large memorial to the war's victims,
• Pan Twardowski – a figure of the legendary Polish sorcerer appears twice a day in a window of house No. 15,
• No. 1 (1780) with the "Golden Eagle" pharmacy,
• No. 24, a Neoclassical building from 1774–1778, now a library,
• the Art Nouveau house at No. 20 (1911).

Look for darker paving in the middle of the square: it traces the outline of the old town hall.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes – it's compact and quick to see (20–30 minutes), but it's the hub for everything else. Within about 600 m you'll find the Gothic cathedral, Mill Island with the Rother Mills, the Opera Nova, the half-timbered granaries and "Bydgoszcz Venice." The square was rebuilt for about 14.3 million PLN and closed to cars on September 8, 2019; trees in planters were added in 2020. It's free and open around the clock, with flat paving that suits strollers and wheelchairs.

Getting there

From Bydgoszcz Główna station it's about 2 km – take a tram toward the center or walk. The square is pedestrian-only and downtown has paid parking zones, so park outside the Old Town.
