Museums
Bydgoszcz, Kuyavian-Pomeranian
The Leon Wyczółkowski District Museum (Muzeum Okręgowe im. Leona Wyczółkowskiego) is the main museum of Bydgoszcz, Poland, spread across several historic buildings downtown and on Mill Island. Its branches cover Polish painting, the largest collection of works by artist Leon Wyczółkowski (say "vih-choow-KOV-skee"), archaeology, the history of money and the story of the city. Most of them can be visited on a single walk with one combined ticket.
Bydgoszcz is a city of about 320,000 in north-central Poland, about 2 hours by train from Gdańsk and 2.5–3.5 hours from Warsaw. The main building is at Gdańska 4, on the city's main downtown street; four branches cluster on Mill Island, next to the Old Market Square.
The museum grew out of a historical society founded in 1880, when the city was Prussian Bromberg. The municipal museum opened on August 5, 1923, a few years after Bydgoszcz returned to Poland. In 1946 it moved into the building on Gdańska Street – built in 1878 as a city clinic – and took the name of Leon Wyczółkowski (1852–1936), a leading Polish painter and printmaker with close ties to the region. The museum holds 691 of his works. After a long EU-funded renovation, the main building reopened in 2021.
Heads-up: from October 19 to November 4, 2026, two exhibition spaces in the main building are closed for technical reasons.
As of October 2026 (valid since February 1, 2025), downtown buildings:

Permanent exhibitions are free on Thursdays. Children under 7 go free. Guided tours in English can be booked for a group fee.
Yes, especially if you like Polish art or want a rainy-day plan. Allow 1–2 hours per building or half a day for a combined circuit: start on Mill Island, then walk to the granaries and on to Gdańska 4. We could not confirm English labels in every branch, but the museum offers English-language guides and workshops for booked groups.
The main building is about 1.5–2 km from Bydgoszcz Główna station, easy by tram along Gdańska Street. Downtown has paid parking zones.
