Bydgoszcz, Kuyavian-Pomeranian
The Rother Mills (MĆyny Rothera, roughly "MWIN-ih ROH-teh-rah") in Bydgoszcz are a restored 19th-century industrial mill complex on Mill Island, right in the city center. Today the brick and half-timbered buildings house a science and culture center with exhibitions on the city and on milling, a hands-on zone for kids, a cafĂ© and a free rooftop viewpoint. It's one of the top things to do in Bydgoszcz, especially on a rainy or wintry day.
Bydgoszcz lies in north-central Poland, about 2 hours by train from GdaĆsk and 2.5â3.5 hours from Warsaw; the local airport is only about 3.5 km from downtown. The mills stand at Mennica 10, a five-minute walk from the Old Market Square.
In 1842 the Prussian official Christian von Rother decided to buy the site for the state trading company Seehandlung â Bydgoszcz was the Prussian city of Bromberg at the time. The marshy ground meant the buildings had to rest on wooden piles. Engineer Friedrich Wulff oversaw construction from 1846 to 1849 (the architect is unknown, and sources differ on the exact completion date).
Two water wheels more than 5 m across drove twelve pairs of millstones around the clock. The mill ran until the end of World War II; the buildings survived, but the machinery was shipped east and the complex became a warehouse. Sold to private investors in 1992 for a hotel that never happened, it slowly decayed until the city bought it back in 2013. Restoration cost about 95 million PLN, more than 30 million of it from EU funds, and the public areas opened in November 2021.
Allow 2â3 hours for all three exhibitions, or half an hour for the building and terrace.
As of October 2026:
Tickets (full / reduced / family): one exhibition 22 / 18 / 50 PLN, two 35 / 29 / 80 PLN, three 48 / 39 / 108 PLN. You can buy online. The Bydgoszcz Tourist Card gives free entry to all three exhibitions.
Yes. Even if you skip the exhibitions, the free terrace is one of the best viewpoints in town, and the building itself is a fine example of 19th-century industrial architecture. We could not confirm English labeling for the exhibitions, so ask at the info desk. As a heritage building it has some accessibility limits; two accessible parking spaces are by the entrance, and the center has an accessibility coordinator you can contact in advance.
Walk from the Old Market Square over the Mill Bridge. From Bydgoszcz GĆĂłwna station it's about 2 km by tram or on foot. There's no public parking on the island.
Also on Mill Island are branches of the separate District Museum (White Granary, European Money Center, Leon WyczĂłĆkowski House â separate tickets). The Opera Nova, the cathedral and the riverside granaries are all a few minutes away.
