Bydgoszcz, Kuyavian-Pomeranian
The Bydgoszcz Water Tower (Wieża ciśnień, roughly "VYEH-zha CHEESH-nyen") is a red-brick neo-Gothic tower from 1900 standing on the escarpment above the Old Town. Today it houses the Water Supply Museum and, at the top, a viewing gallery with one of the best panoramas of the city. If you are looking for things to do in Bydgoszcz that combine history with a view, this is an easy and inexpensive pick.
Bydgoszcz is a city of about 320,000 in north-central Poland, roughly three hours by train from Warsaw and two from Gdańsk. The tower stands at Filarecka 2, in Henryk Dąbrowski Park in the Szwederowo district, about 1 km (0.6 miles) southwest of the Old Market Square. Walking is the nicest option, but expect a steady climb up the slope, around 15–20 minutes from the square. Drivers can park on nearby residential streets.
The tower was built in 1899–1900, when the city was the Prussian town of Bromberg, to a design by Franz Marschall. It is about 45 m (148 ft) tall, round in plan, with a conical roof and lantern. Inside was a tank holding 1,260 cubic meters of water pumped from wells in the Gdańsk Forest, which kept pressure stable across the city's network.
The viewing gallery was a paid attraction from the start: 10 pfennigs, later 10 groszy once the city returned to Poland in 1920. Public access ended after World War II, and the tower was retired from service in 1990. An artists' association used it in the 1990s, and in October 2012 the municipal water company reopened it as a museum.
The highlight is the viewing gallery, roughly 60 m (200 ft) above the Old Town, with telescopes looking over church spires, the Brda River valley and the green belt along the Bydgoszcz Canal. Reaching the top means climbing stairs.
Yes, especially on a clear day or in fall, when the park below turns gold. It is one of the cheapest attractions in the city and a good way to understand Bydgoszcz's layout before exploring on foot. The multimedia kiosks are available in several languages.
The museum's second site, the historic Pump Hall at Gdańska 242 in the Gdańsk Forest, has an outdoor trail with old hydrants and pumps. Down the hill you will find the Old Town, the Museum of Soap and History of Dirt, Mill Island and the Brda riverside boulevards.
