Mill Island (Wyspa Młyńska, roughly "VIS-pah MWIN-skah") is a leafy river island in the heart of Bydgoszcz, Poland, wedged between the Brda River and a narrow side channel called the Młynówka. On just 6.5 hectares (16 acres) you'll find 19th-century mills, timber-framed granaries, several museums, a cascade, an urban beach and the best views of the city's "Little Venice." If you're wondering what to do in Bydgoszcz, start here.
Bydgoszcz is a city of about 320,000 in north-central Poland, about 2 hours by train from Gdańsk and 2.5–3.5 hours from Warsaw. Its airport sits only about 3.5 km from downtown. Mill Island lies about 150 m west of the Old Market Square – you cross a small bridge and you're there.
The island was royal property in the old Polish kingdom, and mills have worked here since the 14th century, hence the name. From 1594 to 1688 a royal mint struck coins on the eastern tip. After the First Partition of Poland in 1772 the city became Prussian Bromberg; building the Bydgoszcz Canal (1772–1774) cut away the island's northern part, and in the 19th century the state-owned Rother Mills rose in the middle.
After World War II the island declined. A major regeneration in 2005–2012, costing close to 100 million PLN, brought it back: the old Międzywodzie channel was recreated as a cascade, a marina was built and the buildings were restored. In 2012 the Polish Tourism Organization named it one of the country's best tourism products.
The island's only street, Mennica ("Mint Street"), links the main sights:
From the southwest bank you look across the Młynówka at Bydgoszcz Venice, a row of 19th-century houses rising straight out of the water. A footbridge leads over the Brda to the striking Opera Nova.
Definitely. A loop of the island takes about an hour; with the museums and the Rother Mills, plan half a day. The museums are open year-round, so the island works in winter and on rainy days too. Water trams run here in season but are suspended from October 12, 2026 until spring. The paths are flat and stroller-friendly.
The island itself is a free public space, open around the clock. As of October 2026:
Walk from the Old Market Square over the Mill Bridge (most Młyński). From Bydgoszcz Główna station it's about 2 km to the center by tram or on foot. There's virtually no public parking on the island, and the city center has paid parking zones.
Nearby: the Old Market Square, the Gothic cathedral, the riverside granaries on Grodzka Street and the Opera Nova – all within a few minutes' walk.
