Fortifications
Toruń, Kuyavian-Pomeranian
Fort IV in Toruń is the best-preserved and most visitor-friendly fort of the 19th-century Toruń Fortress — a Prussian stronghold of red-brick barracks, vaulted casemates and a dry moat that you can explore on your own by day or with a guide in the evening. It's about 4 km north of the Old Town and a great change of pace from Gothic churches: a look at Toruń as a frontier fortress city.
Toruń lies on the Vistula River in north-central Poland, about two to three hours from Warsaw by train and roughly 170 km south of Gdańsk via the A1 motorway; the nearest airport is Bydgoszcz, about 50 km away. Fort IV is at ul. Bolesława Chrobrego 86 in the Katarzynka district, on the northern edge of the city. Driving or cycling is easiest; check city bus (MZK) routes locally. The fort's website gives no parking details.
When Toruń belonged to Prussia, the German army ringed it with fortifications. Planning began in 1872 and over about 37 years some 200 defensive works went up, including seven main forts. Fort IV was among the first, built in 1878–1884 at a cost of over 2.6 million marks to guard the northeastern approaches and the railway stations there.
Under Prussia the fort was numbered II and named after General Ludwig Yorck von Wartenburg, a hero of the Napoleonic Wars. After Toruń returned to Poland in 1920 it was renamed for the 17th-century Polish commander Stanisław Żółkiewski — both names are still on the gate. The Polish Army stationed troops here between the wars and left in 1956. Rather than being demolished, the fort became a mushroom farm, and in the mid-1990s it was adapted for tourism. It covers 13.5 hectares.
Yes, especially with older kids or if you like military history. According to the city, Fort IV is the only fort of the Toruń ring that has been fully prepared for visitors, so it's the place to understand the whole fortress system. Combine it with an afternoon in the Old Town: visit the fort while it's light, then head back for the illuminated riverside. Bring a flashlight and sturdy shoes, as the brick casemates can be chilly; the interiors are not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. Allow 1–1.5 hours.
