Museum of Toruń Gingerbread

The Museum of Toruń Gingerbread is located at 4 Strumykowa Street in the former factory of Gustav Weese. This is not a museum made up solely of display cases: the history of gingerbread is brought to life through the smell of spices, historic tools, ovens and workshops where visitors can make their own decorative gingerbread.

The museum opened in 2015. Inside you can see a collection of wooden gingerbread moulds dating from the 17th to the 20th century, a reconstruction of a medieval oven and equipment from the 19th and 20th centuries. Separate sections cover ingredients, honey and spices, a historic shop interior, a period drawing room and the industrial history of gingerbread production in Toruń. One particularly memorable exhibit is a Żuk van once used to transport gingerbread. The city’s gingerbread tradition itself dates back to at least the 14th century.

Allow around an hour for the exhibition alone and more time if you join a workshop. Workshops take place at scheduled times and places are limited, so check online ticket availability before you arrive. This is one of those attractions where planning ahead makes sense, rather than relying on a last-minute entry during the busiest periods.
