Toruń, Kuyavian-Pomeranian
The Toruń Fortress Museum (Muzeum Twierdzy Toruń, "moo-ZEH-oom TFYER-dzih TOR-oon") is the newest branch of the city's District Museum, set inside the Chełmno Gate Barracks, a 19th-century Prussian barracks built into the earthen ramparts at the edge of the Old Town. Models, dioramas, multimedia and a mobile armored turret tell the story of Toruń's defenses from the Middle Ages to the end of World War II. It's a strong pick for military-history fans and families, and it even has its own parking lot.
Toruń sits on the Vistula River in north-central Poland, about 130 miles (210 km) northwest of Warsaw; its medieval Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After 1815, when the city was part of Prussia, it was turned into a major fortress guarding the kingdom's eastern frontier. Ramparts, bastions and gates ringed the city, and a belt of outer forts was added later.
The Chełmno Gate Barracks housed about 160 soldiers, and an attached ammunition laboratory prepared shells for the guns on the rampart above. The building is 370 feet (113 m) long, with three wings, 16 casemates and 26 rooms, its vaults protected by more than 3 feet (1 m) of concrete. After a renovation costing around 22 million PLN, much of it EU-funded, the museum opened to visitors in February 2021 and was officially inaugurated on June 11, 2021.
Each casemate covers one theme: the garrison, the town's relationship with its fortress, commanders, weapons and equipment. Highlights include:
The route also takes in a former artillery battery and the rampart road along the top of the earthworks. Since September 26, 2026, an outdoor exhibition on the fortifications of the fortress core from 1816 to 1920 has been on display.
Yes, if you're interested in military history or want to understand why Toruń's skyline is ringed with brick and earthworks. The museum puts the maximum visit at two hours; most people need 1–1.5 hours. A guide costs extra, and there are family education trails. It's mostly indoors, so it works year-round. Dogs are welcome: small ones carried, larger ones leashed and muzzled. For accessibility details, check the "Dostępność" section of the museum website.

Trains from Warsaw take roughly 2.5–3 hours; Toruń Miasto station is closer to the center than Toruń Główny across the river. The nearest airport is Bydgoszcz, about 25–30 miles (40–50 km) away.
