Toruń, Kuyavian-Pomeranian
The Toruń panorama from the Majdany Street viewpoint is the classic postcard view of the city: the entire Gothic Old Town lined up along the Vistula River, seen from the opposite bank. From here you take in St. John's Cathedral, the Town Hall tower, red-brick walls, gates, granaries and the ruins of the Teutonic Knights' castle in one sweep. In 2007 readers of the Polish daily Rzeczpospolita voted this skyline one of the Seven Wonders of Poland. It's free, open at all hours, and best after dark.
Toruń lies on the Vistula in north-central Poland, about 2–3 hours by train from Warsaw and some 170 km south of Gdańsk via the A1 motorway. The viewing platform is on the left (south) bank, on Kępa Bazarowa island (roughly "KEM-pa ba-za-RO-va"), directly opposite the medieval Bridge Gate. The spot isn't random: a wooden bridge built between 1497 and 1500 started here, linking the island to the Old Town until it burned in 1707.
The view is framed by two bridges — the road bridge named after Józef Piłsudski to the west and the railway bridge named after Ernest Malinowski to the east. In between, look for:
Kępa Bazarowa is a river island of about 71 hectares. On February 1, 1411, the First Peace of Thorn between Poland-Lithuania and the Teutonic Order was concluded here, after the Battle of Grunwald the year before. About half the island is a nature reserve (established 1987) protecting riverside willow and poplar woodland.
Allow 20–30 minutes at the viewpoint, or about an hour including the walk. Bring a tripod for night shots. Is it worth visiting? If you only do one thing outside the Old Town, make it this.
The viewpoint is free and always open, so it fits any itinerary. It makes a good short walk with kids, passing the ruins of Dybów Castle on the way; the Piłsudski Bridge itself also offers a view of the Old Town. Dress warmly in fall and winter — it's darker and windier by the river than in the center.
On foot from the Old Town: cross the Piłsudski Bridge on its eastern sidewalk, go down to Dybowska Street, and after about 500 m turn onto Majdany Street — roughly 20 minutes in total. In summer the small boat "Katarzynka" shuttles between the landing by the Bridge Gate on Philadelphia Boulevard and a landing at the viewpoint. You can also bike or drive; we couldn't confirm a designated parking lot.
