Museums
Bydgoszcz, Kuyavian-Pomeranian
The Land Forces Museum (Muzeum Wojsk Lądowych) in Bydgoszcz is a state museum devoted to Poland's land forces, telling the military story of Pomerania and Kuyavia from 18th-century uprisings through World War II to the Cold War. Outside stands a park of around 50 tanks, guns and rocket launchers, including a British Chieftain. Bydgoszcz (say "BID-gosh") was also the hometown of Marian Rejewski, the mathematician who first broke the German Enigma cipher, and the museum remembers him too.
Bydgoszcz is a city of about 320,000 in north-central Poland, roughly 3 hours by train from Warsaw and 2 from Gdańsk. The museum is at Czerkaska 2, on the corner of Gdańska Street, about 2.5 km north of the Old Town and on the way to Myślęcinek Forest Park.
The museum traces its roots to 1928, when a military museum opened at the city's officer cadet school; most of that collection was lost during the German occupation. The present institution was founded in 1973 as a museum of the Pomeranian Military District, housed in a purpose-built building designed by Zbigniew Kortas. It became the Pomeranian Military Museum in 2003 and took its current name in 2010. Branches in Toruń and Wrocław, and a heavy-equipment branch at Osowa Góra, are part of the same institution.
The main gallery runs chronologically:
A section on local wartime figures includes mementos of Marian Rejewski. Note that the museum warns some labels may not match the objects while the main exhibition is being reworked.
The outdoor display is the big draw for many visitors: T-34/85, T-55A and T-72 tanks, a Chieftain Mk. 11 acquired from the UK in 2014, howitzers, anti-tank guns, mortars, a "Katyusha" rocket launcher and a Scud missile.
As of October 2026 (official website):
Tickets cost PLN 18 (reduced PLN 12) or PLN 50 for a family. Children under 7 get in free. An English-speaking guide costs PLN 80 per group; book via sekretariat@muzeumwl.pl. The museum doesn't say whether captions are translated, so a guide or translation app is useful.
A city bus stop sits right by the entrance. There's no visitor parking; the museum suggests the lots at the Zawisza stadium, on Powstańców Warszawy Street or at Myślęcinek Park. Allow 1–2 hours.
For military history fans and families with older kids, yes, and Sunday's free entry makes it an easy add-on to a day in Myślęcinek Park, a few minutes further north.
