Gardens
Bydgoszcz, Kuyavian-Pomeranian
The Myślęcinek Botanical Garden (roughly "mish-len-CHEE-nek") in Bydgoszcz, north-central Poland, is a landscape garden rather than a greenhouse collection: around 60 hectares (150 acres) of a stream valley with a cascade of ponds, a limestone rock garden with a waterfall, an arboretum and one of Poland's first sensory trails for blind visitors. By area it's often described as the second-largest botanical garden in Poland, and it's a calm add-on to a day in Myślęcinek Forest Park.
Bydgoszcz lies roughly 2 hours by train from Gdańsk and around 3 from Warsaw, with medieval Toruń about 45 km away. The garden occupies the northeastern part of Myślęcinek Forest Park, about 5 km north of the city center and right next to the city zoo (Gdańska 173–175).
The city decided to create a large botanical garden here in 1977. The concept came from landscape architect Professor Edward Bartmann of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, who wanted to keep the valley's natural plant communities. The garden was laid out between 1980 and 1983; later additions include the trail for the blind (1999), a stone circle (2001), a butterfly garden (2005) and the arboretum (2006), planted with about 1,600 broadleaf trees and shrubs and 180 conifers. The whole site lies within the Lower Vistula Valley Landscape Park.
Allow 1–2 hours. May to October is best: magnolias and lilacs in spring, butterfly bushes in summer, maples and birches coloring up in fall. In winter it's simply a quiet walk. The valley is hilly, so wear comfortable shoes.
The garden is run by the municipal company that manages Myślęcinek Park. As of October 2026 its website doesn't clearly publish current opening hours or admission rules, so call ahead (+48 52 328 00 23) or email sekretariat@myslecinek.pl. Expect information in Polish.
Take city buses 41, 52, 83, 93 or 94 to the "Myślęcinek" stop; the Las Gdański tram terminus has been under reconstruction since January 2026. Paid parking by the zoo costs PLN 7 for the first two hours; parking on Rekreacyjna and Jeździecka streets is free.
If you enjoy gardens and quiet walks, yes, especially in spring and fall. Combine it with the zoo next door or the dinosaur trail elsewhere in the park.
