Stefan Żeromski Museum in Nałęczów

Not far from the Nałęczów spa park stands a wooden house in the Zakopane style: single-room, on a high stone foundation, with log-wall construction, a porch supported on pillars and a roof covered with shingles. It was designed in 1905 by Jan Koszczyc-Witkiewicz and built with the fee that Stefan Żeromski received for the novel „The Ashes”. The studio served the writer as a summer residence — it was here that he finished „The History of a Sin” and wrote „The hetman's pride”, „Słowo o bandosie” and „Róża”.

The museum was opened on 17 June 1928 thanks to the writer's widow, Oktawia née Radziwiłłowicz Żeromska. Today the institution, devoted to the life and work of the author, is a branch of the Literary Museum in Nałęczów and a department of the National Museum in Lublin. The interiors preserve the layout of the former studio, and the gathered memorabilia present both the writer's work and the history of his family.

The garden and surroundings

Behind the house, in the garden, lies the mausoleum of Adam Żeromski, son of Oktawia and Stefan. The museum is within walking distance of the spa centre of Nałęczów, so a visit can easily be combined with a stroll through the park and with the nearby Bolesław Prus Museum.

Practical information

The institution is open all year round, from Wednesday to Sunday between 9:00 and 17:00. The standard ticket costs PLN 6, the reduced one PLN 5, and a guided tour is an additional PLN 35 on top of the ticket price.
