Morskie Oko Lake

Morskie Oko ("MOR-skyeh OH-koh," meaning "Eye of the Sea") is the largest lake on the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains and the most visited spot in Tatra National Park. Sitting at 1,395 m (4,577 ft) beneath sheer granite walls, close to Poland's highest peak, it is the classic day trip from Zakopane. The walk is long but easy, and the payoff is one of the most spectacular mountain views in Central Europe.

Where is Morskie Oko and how do you get there?

The lake lies in the High Tatras on Poland's southern border with Slovakia, about 25 km east of Zakopane, the country's best-known mountain resort. Kraków, with the nearest major international airport, is roughly 2.5–3 hours away by car, depending on traffic. The trail begins at Palenica Białczańska, next to the Łysa Polana border crossing.

Your options for the final stretch:

• Car: parking at the trailhead must be booked online on the Tatra National Park (TPN) website. A car e-ticket costs PLN 36–75 depending on the date, and at least PLN 10 more if bought on the day. Spaces are assigned on arrival at one of three areas, the farthest about 1.5 km (15–20 minutes' walk) from the trail. Parking operates March 1 to November 30, from dawn to dusk, and the park recommends arriving before 8 a.m.
• E-bus: the park runs electric buses from Zakopane to Włosienica (PLN 89) and from Palenica Białczańska to Włosienica (PLN 69); the fare includes park entry. The current timetable runs until October 19, 2026; later departures are added at short notice depending on the weather and road conditions, and snow or ice can shorten the route or cancel trips. The return from Włosienica costs PLN 58 to Palenica and PLN 78 to Zakopane (as of October 2026). Tickets are sold online or at the tourist information point in Zakopane, not on board.
• Horse-drawn carts: since September 1, 2026, a pilot program limits them to the first 2.9 km, up to Mickiewicz Waterfalls.

The hike: distance and timing

The standard route is about 8 km (5 miles) each way on a paved road with a steady climb, marked as the red trail. It passes the Mickiewicz Waterfalls and the Włosienica clearing before reaching the lake and its mountain hut. The park advises budgeting at least 7 hours: around 2.5 hours each way plus 2 hours at the lake. Fitter hikers can continue on the red trail to Czarny Staw (Black Pond) under Rysy, a steeper climb with a stunning view back down over Morskie Oko.

What makes it special

The lake covers about 35 hectares and is more than 50 m deep. Above it rise the jagged Mięguszowieckie peaks and the pointed Mnich ("Monk"), and behind them Rysy (2,499 m), the highest mountain in Poland. Morskie Oko also has a surprising political history: around 1900 the area was disputed between Austrian-ruled Galicia and Hungary, and in 1902 an international arbitration court in Graz awarded it to the Galician (Polish) side. The road you walk on was completed the same year, and the mountain hut by the shore dates from 1908.

Tickets, rules and tips

• Park entry: PLN 11 standard, PLN 5.50 reduced; 7-day tickets cost PLN 55 / PLN 27.50. Buy online, via QR codes at the entrance or at the ticket booth.
• No dogs are allowed in the park, and drones are banned.
• From March 1 to November 30, walking the trails between dusk and dawn is prohibited.
• There are no trash cans along the route, so pack out everything.
• Visitors with disabilities can ride a free e-bus from Zakopane right up to the lake.

In October, days are short and the first snow can arrive, so start early and bring warm layers and a headlamp. The paved route is easy to follow.

Is Morskie Oko worth visiting?

Absolutely, as long as you plan ahead. Book parking or an e-bus seat early, avoid summer weekends if you dislike crowds, and come on a clear day. The road itself is not the most exciting part, but the moment the lake opens up beneath the peaks makes the long walk worthwhile.
