Rysy

Rysy (pronounced RIH-sih) is the highest mountain in Poland: its northwest summit, on the Polish–Slovak border in the High Tatras, rises to about 2,499 meters (8,199 ft). The classic hike from Palenica Białczańska past the famous Morskie Oko lake is one of the most coveted — and most demanding — trails in the Polish Tatras, with chains on the final section and a sweeping view over two glacial lakes from the top. Rysy is part of the "Crown of Europe," the list of the highest peaks of each European country.

Where it is and how to get there

Rysy stands in Tatra National Park, southeast of Zakopane, Poland's main mountain resort. From Kraków (and its international airport) to Zakopane is about 2–2.5 hours by road or bus; from Zakopane, minibuses run to the Palenica Białczańska trailhead. If you drive, you must reserve a parking e-ticket in advance (at least the day before) — prices vary by day and demand.

Three summits, two countries

The Rysy massif has three tops. The middle and highest (about 2,501 m) lies entirely in Slovakia; the northwest summit (about 2,499 m) sits on the border and is Poland's highest point; the third reaches about 2,472 m. An older figure of 2,503 m is now considered too high. The first recorded ascent was on July 30, 1840, by Eduard Blásy and Ján Ruman Driečny Sr.; the first winter ascent followed in 1884.

The hike from Poland

The red-marked trail starts with roughly 9 km on a paved road to the mountain hut at Morskie Oko. From there it is about 50 minutes to the Czarny Staw pod Rysami lake, then around 3 hours of steep climbing via Bula pod Rysami (2,054 m), gullies and rock steps. Nearly 300 meters of chains protect the upper section, and at the Przełączka pod Rysami col the ground drops away steeply on both sides.

From Morskie Oko you gain more than 1,100 meters; the full round trip from Palenica usually takes 10–12 hours. Start at dawn or sleep at the Morskie Oko hut (book well ahead). This is not a casual walk: you need good fitness, a head for heights and mountain experience — more than 50 people have died on the Polish route since it opened.

The Slovak route. From Slovakia, a trail climbs past Chata pod Rysami, a mountain hut on the Slovak side. Like other high trails in Slovakia's Tatra National Park (TANAP), it is closed from November 1 to June 15.

Tickets and rules (as of October 2026)

• Tatra National Park entry: one-day ticket 11 zł (reduced 5.50 zł), seven-day 55/27.50 zł; free for children under 7. Buy online at tpn.gov.pl or at the entrance and save the confirmation offline — phone coverage is patchy.
• Dogs are not allowed on this trail.
• Prices are in Polish złoty (PLN).

Is it worth climbing Rysy in winter?

Only for experienced mountaineers. In winter and spring you need crampons, an ice axe, a helmet and avalanche gear (beacon, probe, shovel) plus the skills to use them. The Bula pod Rysami area and the gully above are avalanche-prone; on January 28, 2003, an avalanche here killed eight members of a school group. Snow often lingers in the gully until late summer. Ski tourers may use the red trail in season, but the park closes it to skiers when the TOPR mountain rescue service requests it. Always check the TOPR avalanche bulletin and park closures first. Best time and what to bring

Aim for July to September in settled weather and reach the summit before noon — Tatra thunderstorms usually build in the afternoon. Bring a helmet, gloves for the chains, rain gear, food and at least 2 liters of water. On summer weekends expect queues at the chains; an early start helps. If the weather turns or you run out of energy, turn back — descending wet chains is especially dangerous.

Easier options nearby. If Rysy is too much, the same valley offers great shorter outings. The paved road from Palenica Białczańska to Morskie Oko is manageable even with a stroller, and the extra 50-minute climb to Czarny Staw pod Rysami reveals the whole Rysy face — for many visitors, that view is reward enough.

Tickets, opening hours and getting there 2026

• Ticket booth at Łysa Polana: from October 15 until 3 pm, November and December 7 am–3 pm, January and February 7 am–2 pm, July and August 5 am–5 pm; outside these hours buy online or via QR code (as of October 2026).
• No hiking at night: from March 1 to November 30 park trails are closed between dusk and dawn, so on a 10–12-hour route plan to be down before dark.
• Parking at Palenica and Łysa Polana: entry only with an online parking e-ticket; booking at least 3 days ahead is cheaper than buying on the day and guarantees a space. Refunds until noon the day before. Spaces are assigned in order of arrival, so aim to arrive before 8 am.
• E-buses: from Zakopane (Nature Education Centre, ul. Chałubińskiego 42) and from Palenica Białczańska to Włosienica; PLN 89 or PLN 69 including park entry, timetable valid until October 19, 2026.
• Autumn conditions: in mid-October 2026, hard frozen snow and ice lie above about 1,850 m and the park warns of long falls on steep ground; microspikes are no substitute for crampons.
