Five Polish Ponds Valley

Five Polish Ponds Valley is a high-mountain basin in the High Tatras, surrounded by rocky summits and filled with alpine lakes. Its central landmark is the PTTK shelter above Przedni Pond, at about 1,670 m above sea level — the highest mountain shelter in Poland. This is a destination for hikers prepared for a longer mountain outing, not a short roadside walk.

The classic route through Roztoka

The green trail from the Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza area leads through Roztoka Valley. The section to Five Polish Ponds is about 5.6 km, takes around 2 hours 30 minutes and climbs 674 m. At the trail junction, choose the green variant towards Siklawa, an impressive waterfall about 40 m high, or the black, more direct route to the shelter over stone steps. Rocks near Siklawa can be slippery when wet, so wear stable hiking shoes and allow plenty of time.

Trails, safety and practical details

There is no road for cars to the shelter; access is only on foot along mountain trails. From Morskie Oko, the route via Świstówka takes around 2 hours, while the ascent from the shelter to Zawrat takes about 1 hour 40 minutes. These are routes for experienced hikers with good fitness. From 1 December to 15 May, the Morskie Oko–Świstówka–Five Polish Ponds trail is seasonally closed. Entry to Tatra National Park is paid. Before setting out, check the TPN bulletin, weather and avalanche conditions; conditions at high altitude can change quickly.
