Gąsienicowa Valley and Hala Gąsienicowa

Gąsienicowa Valley is one of the most distinctive mountain areas in the Polish Tatras. Most visitors aim for Hala Gąsienicowa and the Murowaniec PTTK mountain shelter, with views towards Kościelec, Świnica, the Granaty peaks and the surrounding alpine landscape. It is a rewarding choice for travellers who want a close look at the high mountains, but the approach from Kuźnice requires reasonable fitness and is more than an ordinary walk.

Route from Kuźnice

The blue trail from Kuźnice to Hala Gąsienicowa is about 4.7 km long. Zakopane’s official trail description gives around 2 hours 15 minutes for the ascent, with 566 m of uphill gain. An alternative is the yellow trail through Jaworzynka Valley, which joins the route at Przełęcz między Kopami. The path starts in forest and later opens onto views of the valleys and ridges. Entry to Tatra National Park is ticketed, so check the current fare and park notices before setting out.

Murowaniec and longer hikes

Murowaniec stands at about 1,500 m above sea level and serves as a rest stop and trail junction. From Hala Gąsienicowa you can continue to Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy; the official route is about 1.6 km and takes around 45 minutes from the shelter. More demanding plans lead towards Zawrat, Kasprowy Wierch, Kościelec and Orla Perć. These routes require experience, suitable equipment and a careful assessment of conditions. Expect rocky and steep sections, wear proper hiking shoes, carry enough water and check the weather forecast.
