Kasprowy Wierch

Kasprowy Wierch (roughly "KAS-pro-vy VEERH", 1,987 m / 6,519 ft) is the most accessible high peak in the Polish Tatra Mountains and one of the most visited summits in Poland. It rises on the Polish–Slovak border above the mountain resort of Zakopane, and a cable car from Kuźnice takes you almost to the top in about 20 minutes. If you are looking for things to do in Zakopane, this is the classic way to see the Tatras up close, even without serious hiking experience.

Where it is and how to get there

Zakopane lies about 100 km (62 miles) south of Kraków; buses and minibuses from Kraków take around two hours, depending on traffic, and there is also a rail link. Kraków Airport is the closest major international airport. The cable car's lower station is in Kuźnice (Kuźnice 14), a mountain hamlet roughly 3 km above central Zakopane. Private cars cannot drive up to Kuźnice, so leave your car in a Zakopane parking lot and take a local minibus or a taxi, or walk.

What makes it special

The summit sits on the main ridge of the Tatras, where the Western and High Tatras meet, and the whole massif is part of Tatra National Park. Unlike the surrounding limestone peaks, its top is made of crystalline granodiorite. On the summit you will find:

• a meteorological observatory built in 1938, which has been the highest building in Poland since 1945
• border markers between Poland and Slovakia along the ridge
• sweeping views of Świnica, Kościelec, Giewont, the Czerwone Wierchy ridge and the Slovak side of the range
• the upper cable car station with a restaurant, and chairlifts in the Goryczkowa and Gąsienicowa bowls that serve popular ski runs in winter

The name comes from Hala Kasprowa, a meadow at the foot of the mountain, traditionally linked to a highlander named Kasper.

The cable car and the hiking trails

The cable car ride takes about 20 minutes one way, with a change of cabins at the Myślenickie Turnie mid-station. The top station sits at 1,959 m, a short walk below the summit. With a round-trip ticket you get 1 hour 40 minutes at the top; if you want to hike down, buy a one-way ticket.

Popular hiking options:

• the green trail from Kuźnice via Myślenickie Turnie, about 3 hours uphill according to trail planners
• the yellow trail from Hala Gąsienicowa and the Murowaniec mountain hut, often used for a loop back to Kuźnice
• the red ridge trail east toward Beskid, Liliowe Pass and Świnica, or west toward the Czerwone Wierchy

The most popular combination is to ride up and walk down via Hala Gąsienicowa, which takes you past a classic Tatra meadow and mountain hut.

Tickets and opening hours (as of October 2026)

According to the official PKL price list, in the low season (October 1 – December 18, 2026):

• round trip: PLN 129 standard (ages 27–64), PLN 109 reduced (ages 5–26 and 65+)
• one way up: PLN 119 standard, PLN 95 reduced
• an "express" ticket with a guaranteed departure time: PLN 159 / 129 round trip

Children up to age 4 ride free with an adult. Buying online lets you book a departure time; arrive at the gate 20 minutes before departure. Return tickets stop being sold 2 hours before the last run.

Important: the Kasprowy Wierch resort is closed for maintenance from October 19 to November 6, 2026. First and last departures change by season, so check pkl.pl before you go. Strong wind or icing can suspend service.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, on a clear day it is one of the best viewpoints in Poland. A few things to know:

• Even in summer the summit can be cold, windy and foggy; bring layers, a rain jacket and proper shoes.
• Dogs are not allowed in Tatra National Park (guide dogs excepted).
• Hikers pay a separate national park entry fee; check current rates on the park's website.
• Peak-season crowds can reach 4,000 people a day; go early or on a weekday.
• In winter, slopes and gullies around the summit carry avalanche risk; follow official warnings.

September and early October often bring the clearest air and fewer visitors than July and August. Prices on the mountain are in Polish złoty (PLN).

Nearby

Hala Gąsienicowa with the Murowaniec hut, the Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy lake, Kalatówki and the Bystra Valley all make good extensions. Back in Zakopane, stroll Krupówki Street, visit the Tatra Museum or ride the funicular up Gubałówka hill.

Tickets, opening hours and getting there 2026

• Frequency: cabins leave every 10 minutes, every 30 minutes in poor weather or when few people are riding (as of October 2026).
• Summer evenings: in July and August the last ride up is at 7 pm.
• Strong wind: if the cable car stops running because of wind, you can return your ticket for a full refund.
• To the lower station: Kuźnice is closed to private cars; city buses stop right by the cable car, and the walk from the John Paul II roundabout takes about 40 minutes.
• Parking: the national park runs a paid car park on ul. Chałubińskiego, PLN 30 per car for the whole day.
