Hala Gąsienicowa

Hala Gąsienicowa (roughly "HA-la gon-sheh-nee-TSO-va") is a wide mountain meadow in the Gąsienicowa Valley of Poland's High Tatras and one of the most popular hikes from Zakopane. From the trailhead at Kuźnice it takes a little over two hours to reach the Murowaniec mountain hut, wooden shepherds' cabins and a postcard view of the jagged peaks of Kościelec and Świnica. If you want one classic Tatra day hike, this is a strong candidate.

Where it is and how to get there

Zakopane is about 100 km (62 miles) south of Kraków, roughly two hours by bus or minibus. The hike starts in Kuźnice, about 3 km above the town center; private cars are not allowed up there, so take a local minibus or taxi. Two trails lead up with similar walking times:

• the blue trail via Boczań and Skupniów Upłaz, with views back over Zakopane and Giewont
• the yellow trail through the Jaworzynka valley, mostly through forest

Both meet at the Przełęcz między Kopami saddle, and the total walk to the hut takes just over 2 hours. A popular alternative: take the cable car up Kasprowy Wierch and walk down the yellow trail to the hut in about 1 hour 5 minutes, then on to Kuźnice.

Some history

The meadow is named after the Gąsienica highland family, who owned it in the 17th century. For centuries it was a major sheep-grazing area; as late as 1960, the equivalent of 494 sheep grazed here, and in 1961 the state bought the land from 381 co-owners. The wooden huts scattered across the meadow are reminders of that pastoral past. Next to it, a Polish Academy of Sciences research station has recorded weather data since December 1, 1913, making it the first mountain weather station on Polish lands.

• Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy, a dark glacial lake a short walk from the hut
• Zawrat pass via the blue trail, about 2 hours 20 minutes, steep, with chains in places
• Krzyżne via the yellow trail through the Pańszczyca Valley, about 2 hours 45 minutes
• Orla Perć, the hardest marked trail in the Tatras, for which the hut is a common base; experienced hikers only

Practical tips (as of October 2026)

The meadow is inside Tatra National Park: an entry fee is collected at trailheads (check current rates on the park website), and dogs are not allowed. The Murowaniec hut is open year-round with a buffet and beds; book and check prices directly with the hut. Bear warning signs are posted in the area, so never leave food lying around. August brings pink fireweed in bloom; September often offers clearer air and fewer people. In winter, avalanche risk affects routes above the meadow. Prices at the hut are in Polish złoty (PLN).

Is it worth visiting?

Absolutely. It is a manageable half-day hike for reasonably fit families, with a hut for lunch and some of the best scenery in the Polish Tatras. Strollers will not work on the rocky trail.
