Ski resorts
Zakopane, Lesser Poland
Skiing on Kasprowy Wierch (kahs-PROH-vee VYEHR-h) above Zakopane is the only true high-mountain skiing in Poland. Runs in the Gąsienicowy and Goryczkowy cirques start at 1,987 m and lie entirely inside Tatra National Park, with no snowmaking and no floodlights, just steep natural-snow terrain, long descents and big alpine views. If you are a confident skier wondering whether Kasprowy is worth it, it is the most dramatic ski day Poland offers.
Kasprowy Wierch is a peak in the Western High Tatras on the Polish–Slovak border, directly above Zakopane in southern Poland. Zakopane is about 105 km from Kraków, whose airport is the usual gateway. The lifts start at Kuźnice, a hamlet at the edge of Zakopane at roughly 1,000 m.
The ski area is run by Polskie Koleje Linowe (PKL, Polish Cable Railways). According to PKL:
Groomed runs: about 1,200 m in the Gąsienicowy cirque, 2,100 m in the Goryczkowy cirque, plus a 3,500 m ski road from Hala Goryczkowa toward Kuźnice. With enough snow you can ski close to 1,000 vertical meters back to the valley.
The cable car was built in 1935–36 in roughly eight months despite protests from conservationists, making Kasprowy the cradle of Polish downhill skiing. The Gąsienicowa chairlift dates from 1962 (modernized in 2000) and the Goryczkowa lift from 1968. After a full rebuild, the cable car reopened on January 18, 2008. The summit weather observatory, built in 1938, is the highest building in Poland.
Because the runs are inside a national park, they are not machine-made, not lit. PKL, the park authority and the TOPR mountain rescue service jointly decide when they open, once the snow cover protects the vegetation. The season often starts later than lower resorts but runs long: in 2025/26 the Gąsienicowa lift ran until May 3, 2026, while the Goryczkowa run closed a week earlier to avoid disturbing marmots waking from hibernation. Dogs are not allowed in the park (assistance dogs excepted). Check the TOPR avalanche bulletin before skiing; off-piste terrain is serious mountain ground.
For strong intermediates and experts, yes. Both runs are graded difficult. Beginners and families are better off on the snowmaking slopes of Zakopane or Białka Tatrzańska.
Private cars cannot drive to Kuźnice; park in Zakopane and take a minibus or bus, or walk. Note that the cable car closes for maintenance October 19–November 6, 2026; in October it otherwise runs 8 a.m.–5:30 p.m.
Trasy narciarskie poza sezonem (październik 2026) nieczynne; kolej linowa kursuje turystycznie 8:00–17:30, z przerwą techniczną 19.10–6.11.2026; otwarcie tras zimą 2026/27 zależy od śniegu i decyzji PKL, TPN i TOPR.
Skipass sezonowy PKL 2026/27: 2499 zł (ulgowy 1999 zł) przy zakupie online 1.10–30.11.2026, od 1.12.2026 2799/2299 zł; miejscówka na kolej 45 zł; skipassy dzienne 2026/27 nieogłoszone. Kolej turystycznie (1.10–18.12.2026): góra–dół 129 zł, ulgowy 109 zł.
