Suche Czuby (Western Tatras)

Suche Czuby – properly Suche Czuby Kondrackie – are three granite crags on the main ridge of the Western Tatras, between Goryczkowa Czuba and Suchy Wierch Kondracki. The Polish–Slovak border runs along them, and the red trail from Kasprowy Wierch to the Przełęcz pod Kopą Kondracką pass passes just below. It is one of the most scenic stretches of the ridge, with sheer walls on the Polish side and gentle slopes on the Slovak side.

A ridge of three crags

From west to east rise Mała Sucha Czuba (1,832 m), Pośrednia Sucha Czuba (1,844 m) and Wysoka Sucha Czuba (1,876 m) – these heights come from lidar measurements; older guidebooks give slightly different figures. The crags are separated by notches with charming names: Gładki Przechód, Skryte Wrótka, Niskie Wrótka and Wysokie Wrótka. The name comes from the Sucha Kondracka Valley, into which the north faces and steep gullies drop, ending in a glacial cirque. The southern slopes fall gently into the Slovak Tichá Valley.

Geology and nature

Suche Czuby are made of granite from the so-called Goryczkowa crystalline island, which sets them apart from the limestone parts of the Western Tatras. Siderite and traces of rock mineralisation and mylonitisation occur in the notches. Rare alpine plants grow on the grassy slopes by the path: the yellow Sudeten violet and the mountain houseleek.

Did you know?

• In autumn 1907 the composer Mieczysław Karłowicz observed and photographed a Brocken spectre here – the observer's shadow surrounded by a rainbow halo on the clouds.
• Climbers ignored Suche Czuby for a long time. Only in the 1970s were the north faces first climbed, by Zakopane mountaineers Maciej Pawlikowski, Mieczysław Ziach and Zbigniew Młynarczyk.

The trail

The red main-ridge trail from Kasprowy Wierch to Przełęcz pod Kopą Kondracką bypasses the summits – it traverses the southern slopes of Goryczkowa Czuba and Suche Czuby on the Slovak side and reaches the crest at the notches. The walk takes about 1 h 40 min, or 1 h 20 min in the opposite direction. The Kasprowy Wierch – Przełęcz pod Kopą Kondracką section scores 7 points in the PTTK Mountain Hiking Badge (GOT). From the pass you can descend to Hala Kondratowa and on to Kuźnice, or climb Kopa Kondracka.

Tripto tips

The easiest start is Kasprowy Wierch, reached by cable car from Kuźnice, returning via Hala Kondratowa – the whole route to Kuźnice is about 9 km. Entry to Tatra National Park is paid, and dogs are not allowed on this trail. In winter the area is avalanche-prone: huge avalanches run from the southern slopes into the Tichá Valley, especially down the Wielki Żleb Kondracki gully, so the winter route keeps strictly to the crest, away from cornices. Go in stable weather – the ridge is exposed and storms in the Tatras build quickly.
