Zakopane, Lesser Poland
The Biały Valley (Dolina Białego, DOH-lee-nah bya-WEH-go) is a short, wild valley right above Zakopane, a few minutes' walk from the Wielka Krokiew ski jump. Its lower section is a narrow limestone gorge where the trail crosses a rushing stream on wooden footbridges between rock walls. It makes a great 2–3 hour walk, and combined with the Sarnia Skała viewpoint it is one of the best short hiking loops in the Polish Tatras.
Zakopane is in southern Poland, about 100 km (60 miles) south of Kraków, at the foot of the Tatra Mountains on the Slovak border; buses and cars from Kraków take roughly two hours. The valley lies in Tatra National Park between the Krokiew ridge and Sarnia Skała. It is about 2.5 km long, and its entrance, at around 910 m (2,985 ft), is on the Droga pod Reglami forest road, about 0.5 km west of the ski jump.
The highlight is the Kotły gorge, a karst canyon below a rock called Kazalnica (the Pulpit). The Biały stream drops steeply here, carving potholes, small waterfalls and smooth rock steps into the limestone and dolomite. Higher up the valley widens into spruce, beech and fir forest.
An unusual piece of Cold War history is hidden here too: in the early 1950s the valley was prospected for uranium, digging two adits and closing the area to tourists. The lower adit, about 270 m long, is now barred with a wooden grate — you can only see the entrance.
The classic loop goes up the Biały Valley, over Sarnia Skała and down through the Strążyska Valley back to town; allow 3.5–4 hours. An out-and-back walk in the gorge takes about 2 hours.
Yes — it is more dramatic and usually less crowded than the neighboring Strążyska Valley. School-age children can manage the gorge, but the path is narrower and rockier, so strollers are not practical. The climb to Sarnia Skała needs basic fitness. Dogs are not allowed on national park trails.
As of October 2026, according to Tatra National Park:
In winter the footbridges and the gorge floor can be very icy. Microspikes and poles are essential, especially for Sarnia Skała. Days are short, so start early and check the park's trail and avalanche bulletins first.
Walk from the center toward Wielka Krokiew and follow the Droga pod Reglami road west; the nearest parking is around the ski jump. Afterward, ride the chairlift up Wielka Krokiew or explore the Strążyska Valley.
