Castles
Kazimierz Dolny, Lublin
Kazimierz Dolny Castle is a 14th-century royal stronghold in ruins on a hill above the Vistula, together with an even older round watchtower that once guarded a river crossing. Climbing up from the Market Square takes only a short walk, and the walls and viewing terrace reward you with one of the finest views over the Vistula valley in eastern Poland. It is one of the top things to do in Kazimierz Dolny.
Kazimierz Dolny ("kah-ZHEE-myesh DOL-nee") lies about 60 km (an hour by car) from Lublin and roughly 150 km (a little over two hours) from Warsaw. The castle sits on Castle Hill, just above the parish church and the Market Square.
According to the medieval chronicler Jan Długosz, the lower castle was built in the 1340s for King Casimir the Great (Kazimierz Wielki), one of medieval Poland's great builders of castles and towns. Its high limestone walls enclosed a large courtyard where local people could take refuge in wartime. In the late 15th century a residential wing and a square tower facing the river were added; in the 16th century the Firlej family gave the buildings Renaissance parapets.
The castle was burned by Swedish troops in 1655 during the "Deluge" (the Swedish invasion of Poland) and further wrecked in 1657. It fell into ruin in the 18th century; in the early 19th century the Austrian authorities pulled down parts of the walls and, according to the local tourist office, blew up the river tower in 1809. Excavations in 1958–1960 led to the ruins being stabilized and opened to visitors.
About 180 m away and 19 m higher stands a round tower from around 1300, possibly built under King Władysław the Short. It guarded the Vistula crossing, collected tolls and served as a beacon for raftsmen at night and in fog. It is about 20 m tall, with walls over 4 m thick at the base; you enter 6 m above ground via wooden stairs. On very clear days, it is said you can see the transmitter on Święty Krzyż, about 82 km away.
Allow 1–1.5 hours. Paths are hilly and partly stepped, so strollers and wheelchairs will struggle.
Absolutely — for the views alone. Combine it with Three Crosses Hill next door for the classic panorama of the town.
Buses run to Kazimierz Dolny from Lublin and from Puławy, the nearest train station. From the Market Square walk up Zamkowa Street past the parish church. Drivers should use the official municipal car parks. The ferry to Janowiec Castle across the river did not operate in 2026 because of low water; the road detour via Puławy is about 34 km.
