Tower in Kazimierz Dolny

The tower in Kazimierz Dolny is a round stone keep standing alone on the crest of Castle Hill – the oldest fortification in town and one of the best viewpoints over the Vistula River. It was built around 1300, before King Casimir the Great raised the castle below, and today it is part of the Castle Complex, so you can climb it for a sweeping view of the town's rooftops, the parish church and the wide river valley.

Where is it?

Kazimierz Dolny (roughly "kah-ZHEE-mesh DOL-nee") is a historic small town on the Vistula in eastern Poland, about 45 km (28 miles) west of Lublin and around 150 km southeast of Warsaw. The tower stands above the castle ruins, a 10–15 minute uphill walk from the Market Square.

History

The tower, sometimes called Łokietek's Tower after King Władysław the Elbow-High, dates from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. It guarded a river crossing where an old trade route met the Vistula. Historians have proposed many roles – prison, treasury, customs post, even a lighthouse – but the likeliest is that it protected the crossing and collected tolls from merchants. After the castle was built lower down, the conical roof was removed, and a fire lit on top may have guided river boatmen.

What makes it special

The tower is about 20 m (65 ft) tall with a base circumference of 32.5 m. Its walls are about 4.2 m thick at the bottom and about 3 m at the top. The only original entrance is roughly 6 m above the ground, and the lowest level held a dungeon. From the top you see the castle ruins, the parish church, the roofs around the square, the sandbanks of the Vistula and, on a clear day, the ruins of Janowiec Castle across the river. Late afternoon light is the most flattering.

The tower and the castle

One ticket covers the whole Castle Complex, so see both. According to the medieval chronicler Jan Długosz, the lower castle was built on the orders of Casimir the Great in the 1340s. From 1509 it belonged to the Firlej family, who remodeled it in Renaissance style. Swedish and Transylvanian troops wrecked it in 1655–1657, and after a fire in 1663 it was abandoned. Following excavations in 1958–1960 the walls were stabilized as a permanent ruin. The path between castle and tower climbs a wooded slope with views over the town.

Opening hours and tickets

The Castle Complex (ruins and tower) is run by KOKPiT, the town's cultural and tourism center. As of October 2026 its website lists:

• open daily 9 am – 5 pm,
• last entry to the castle at 4:30 pm and to the tower at 4:45 pm,
• tickets PLN 15 regular, PLN 10 reduced,
• possible closure in dangerous weather (storms, heavy rain, ice or snow).

Is it worth visiting?

Yes – for a modest ticket price you get the best panorama in town, and the combined visit to the castle and tower takes about an hour. Park in one of the paid lots in town rather than trying to drive up the hill, and pair the tower with the Hill of Three Crosses, the Market Square and a walk along the river.
