Kazimierz Dolny, Lublin
The Natural History Museum in Kazimierz Dolny occupies a striking late-16th-century granary on the Vistula, and it is one of the best things to do in Kazimierz Dolny with kids or on a rainy day. Inside, exhibits explain the river gorge, the loess ravines and the chalky limestone that give this corner of eastern Poland its character; outside, the building itself tells the story of the town's golden age, when grain was shipped downriver to Gdańsk and the Baltic.
Kazimierz Dolny ("kah-ZHEE-myesh DOL-ni") is a small Renaissance town on the Vistula, about 150 km (2 hours by car) southeast of Warsaw and an hour from Lublin. The museum is a branch of the Vistula River Museum (Muzeum Nadwiślańskie) and stands at ul. Puławska 54, roughly a 15-minute riverside walk from the market square.
The building is known as the Ulanowski Granary, after later owners; its first owner was the merchant Mikołaj Przybyła. The local tourist office dates it to 1591, and the year appears on the gable. In the 17th century several dozen granaries lined the riverbank here. Only a handful survive, and this one is the closest to its original look. Over the centuries it also served as a tannery and a fertilizer store before the museum took it over after a renovation completed in 1986.
Look for the details: a 14 × 16 m plan on three floors, limestone walls up to 1 m thick at ground level, a stepped gable with scrolls and pinnacles, an arcaded loggia and a massive original timber roof structure.
Allow 45–60 minutes. Labels are mainly in Polish, but the specimens and live animals work for any visitor. The museum also runs lessons, workshops and field trips for school groups and families. According to the local tourist office, the top floor with the historic roof timbers is to be fully opened once renovation work is finished, so ask at the desk whether it is accessible.
There is no railway in Kazimierz Dolny: take the train to Puławy and a local bus, or drive. Park in one of the public lots along al. Kazimierza Wielkiego and walk along the river; the flat route past the historic granaries is pleasant with children. Accessibility details are not published, so call ahead if you use a wheelchair.
Yes – it is compact, family-friendly and housed in one of the finest surviving granaries in Poland. Combine it with a walk along the riverfront and the town's other granaries. For 2026 planning, note that the Vistula ferry to Janowiec did not run this season because of low water, and the popular Korzeniowy Dół ravine is closed until further notice.
