Market Square in Kazimierz Dolny

The Market Square in Kazimierz Dolny is the heart of one of Poland's prettiest small towns: an irregular, cobbled square with a wooden-roofed well in the middle, ornate Renaissance townhouses with arcades, and a parish church looking down from the slope above. It is where every walk around Kazimierz begins, and within a few minutes you can reach the castle ruins, the medieval tower, the Hill of Three Crosses and the Vistula riverbank. The town's historic center is listed as a Monument of History, Poland's top national heritage designation.

Where is Kazimierz Dolny?

Kazimierz Dolny (pronounced roughly "kah-ZHEE-mesh DOL-nee") sits on the Vistula River in eastern Poland, about 45 km (28 miles) west of Lublin – roughly an hour by car – and about 150 km southeast of Warsaw, a drive of two to two and a half hours. Buses and minibuses run from Lublin and from the nearby town of Puławy. Lublin Airport is the closest international airport. Don't confuse the town with Kazimierz, the historic Jewish district of Kraków – they are 300 km apart.

A brief history

The square took shape around the turn of the 15th century. In 1406 King Władysław Jagiełło granted the town Magdeburg rights and established a Saturday market. Fires around 1560 and 1585 destroyed the wooden houses, and merchants grown rich on the grain trade – barges carried wheat down the Vistula to Gdańsk – rebuilt in stone. The town later suffered during the Swedish wars (1657), a fire in 1866 and both world wars. Much of what you see today is the result of careful postwar reconstruction led by architect Karol Siciński.

Things to do on the Market Square

• The Przybyła Brothers' Houses (nos. 12 and 13) – two adjoining townhouses dated 1615, the town's signature sight. Their Mannerist facades are covered in reliefs of saints, animals and plants, topped by tall decorative parapets. They are named after the patron saints of the merchant brothers who built them: St. Nicholas and St. Christopher.
• The well – the square's most photographed feature. Its current wooden canopy, in the Zakopane mountain style, was designed in 1913 by Jan Koszczyc-Witkiewicz.
• Werniks the dog – a bronze statue by Bogdan Markowski, unveiled in 2000 in front of house no. 16. Visitors rub his nose for luck, which is why it shines.
• The Gdańsk House (nos. 18–18a) – a Baroque townhouse from 1795, rebuilt after the war.
• House no. 19 – headquarters of the Vistula Museum, including the Museum of Goldsmithing, the only museum of its kind in Poland.
• The parish church of St. John the Baptist and St. Bartholomew – on the slope at the northeastern corner of the square.

How long do you need?

The square itself takes fifteen minutes, but plan two to three hours for a loop: square, parish church, castle ruins and tower, Hill of Three Crosses and the riverside boulevard. The square is public and free, open around the clock. Weekends from spring to fall are busy, so come early in the morning for photos without crowds; in the evening the well and facades are lit up. Late spring and early fall are the most pleasant seasons; in summer the square becomes a stage for the national Festival of Folk Bands and Singers, held here every year – great for atmosphere, less so for quiet sightseeing. The cobblestones are uneven, which slows strollers and wheelchairs, although the square is flat. Cafés and art galleries line the square – painters have been coming to Kazimierz for more than a century.

Practical tips

• Prices are in Polish zloty (PLN); cards are widely accepted in cafés and museums.
• Park on one of the paid lots on the edge of the center and walk in – the old streets are narrow.
• The castle complex (ruins and tower) is open daily 9 am – 5 pm, with tickets at PLN 15 regular and PLN 10 reduced (as of October 2026).

Is it worth visiting?

Yes. Kazimierz Dolny is one of the best day trips from Lublin and a rewarding weekend from Warsaw. Combine the square with the castle tower views, the loess gorges outside town and a walk along the Vistula for a full day.
