Kazimierz Dolny
The Vistula River Museum in Kazimierz Dolny (Muzeum Nadwiślańskie) is a regional museum spread across several branches that cover the art, history and nature of the middle Vistula valley in eastern Poland. In town you can choose between Poland's only museum of goldsmithing, a Renaissance townhouse devoted to the local artists' colony, a natural history museum in a 16th-century granary and the home of writer Maria Kuncewiczowa. It is one of the best things to do in Kazimierz Dolny when the weather turns.
Kazimierz Dolny ("kah-ZHEE-myesh DOL-nee") lies on the Vistula about 60 km (one hour by car) from Lublin and roughly 150 km (just over two hours) from Warsaw. The museum's headquarters is at Rynek 19 on the Market Square.
The collection began between the wars, when the Friends of Kazimierz Society gathered art in the Celej House. The museum itself was founded on March 29, 1963, took its current name in 1987, and since 1999 has been run by the Lublin regional government. Janowiec Castle across the river, once a branch, has been a separate museum since 2025.
Allow 45–60 minutes per branch.
The main building has an elevator; check the museum's accessibility statement for other branches.
Yes, if you pick the right branch: decorative arts fans should head for the goldsmithing museum, art lovers for the Celej House, families for the natural history museum. Exhibit labels may be mostly in Polish.
Buses connect Kazimierz with Lublin and Puławy (nearest train station). Drivers must use designated car parks. Between branches you will pass the Przybyła Brothers' Townhouses, the parish church and the former synagogue. Note: the Janowiec ferry did not run in 2026 and the Korzeniowy Dół gorge is closed until further notice.
