Kazimierz Dolny, Lublin
The Celej House in Kazimierz Dolny (Kamienica Celejowska, roughly "keh-leh-YOV-skah") is a 17th-century merchant's house with one of the most lavishly carved Renaissance parapets in Poland — and, inside, a branch of the Vistula Museum devoted to the artists who made this small river town famous. It is an easy one-hour stop on a walk around the old town and a good plan for a rainy day.
Kazimierz Dolny sits on the Vistula in eastern Poland, about an hour's drive (60 km) from Lublin and a little over two hours (around 150 km) from Warsaw. The Celej House stands on Senatorska Street, two minutes on foot from the Market Square.
The exact building date is unknown: the house appears in town records in 1635, and its decoration points to around 1620 (the 1578 date over the gate is considered a later invention). It was built for grain merchant Bartłomiej Celej, whose family was of Italian origin. A local legend says an Englishman tried to buy the facade in the 1880s and ship it to England; the deal never happened. After a fire in 1915, a heritage society bought and restored the house in 1917–1920. It became a regional museum in the 1960s and a branch of the Vistula Museum (Muzeum Nadwiślańskie) in 1987.
The facade is the star. The decorative attic takes up more than a third of the building's height and features:
Inside, the exhibition tells the story of Kazimierz as an artists' colony, from 19th-century landscape painters to the interwar summer workshops of painter Tadeusz Pruszkowski and his students. The selection on display can change. Allow 45–60 minutes.
Yes, especially if you are interested in architecture or Polish painting: the facade alone justifies the short detour from the square, and the exhibition adds context that most visitors to Kazimierz miss.
There is no train station in town; take a bus from Puławy (nearest railway station) or Lublin, or drive and use the official car parks, for example on Senatorska Street. Nearby are the Przybyła Brothers' Townhouses on the square, the Museum of Goldsmithing in the main museum building at Rynek 19, the Franciscan monastery with its covered stairs, and the castle ruins. Note that the popular Korzeniowy Dół loess gorge has been closed until further notice in 2026.
