Kazimierz Dolny, Lublin
The Church of the Annunciation and the Franciscan (Reformati) Monastery in Kazimierz Dolny is a hilltop religious complex above the Market Square, known for its covered oak staircase and a venerated 400-year-old painting of the Annunciation. It is one of the most atmospheric corners of this small Vistula River town in eastern Poland, with views over the rooftops and a history stretching from Renaissance merchants to the Nazi occupation.
Kazimierz Dolny ("kah-ZHEE-myesh DOL-nee") lies about an hour's drive (60 km) from Lublin and just over two hours (150 km) from Warsaw. The monastery sits on a hill a few minutes' walk from the Market Square.
The church was founded by local burghers — Bartłomiej and Mikołaj Przybyła — and consecrated on August 11, 1591. The local tourist office says the first church was wooden; it was later enlarged in Baroque style. In 1627 Reformed Franciscan friars arrived, and between 1639 and 1668 they built the monastery, enclosed by a stone wall.
A fire in 1827 badly damaged the complex. In 1865, under Russian rule, the monastery was closed and the friars were moved to Pińczów; they returned in 1928. From 1942 to 1944 the German Gestapo used the monastery as its headquarters, with a prison in the cellars — a dark chapter that links the site to the wider history of the Second World War in Poland. After the war part of the buildings housed a boarding school (1945–1958), and in 1956 a small museum of manuscripts, early printed books and sacred art was set up here. Today it again belongs to the Franciscans (Order of Friars Minor), Province of Our Lady of the Angels in Kraków.
The friary itself is an enclosed community, so its interiors are not open like a museum. Allow 20–30 minutes.
This is a working church. We could not find official visiting hours or a Mass schedule online, so visit outside services, keep quiet and dress respectfully. The stairs make access difficult for wheelchair users.
Yes, especially if you enjoy quiet places away from the busy square — the covered staircase alone is a rare sight.
Buses run to Kazimierz Dolny from Lublin and from Puławy (nearest train station). Drivers must use designated car parks. Nearby are the Przybyła Brothers' Townhouses, the Celej House museum, the castle ruins and Three Crosses Hill.
