Kazimierz Dolny, Lublin
Three Crosses Hill in Kazimierz Dolny (Góra Trzech Krzyży, roughly "GOO-rah TSHEH-h KSHI-zhih") rises about 50 m above the Market Square and offers the town's most famous view: red roofs, the parish church, the castle ruins and the broad Vistula valley. Three wooden crosses at the top commemorate victims of an early 18th-century epidemic. A short climb up stone steps makes it one of the easiest and most rewarding things to do in Kazimierz Dolny.
Kazimierz Dolny is a small historic town on the Vistula in eastern Poland, about an hour's drive (60 km) from Lublin and just over two hours (150 km) from Warsaw. The hill lies right above the town center, next to the castle.
Town records mention the hill as "Cross Hill" from 1577. Three crosses evoking Golgotha were raised in 1708 in memory of the many victims of an epidemic. They have been renewed over the centuries; the current crosses date from 1852, and most inscriptions from 1930. The hill, about 175 m above sea level, is a spur of the Nałęczów Plateau cut off by loess ravines on three sides.
In May 2026 erosion exposed human bones on the slope. Rescue excavations led by the Polish Academy of Sciences' Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology, ordered by the regional heritage conservator, uncovered two children's graves provisionally dated to the 16th–17th centuries. Archaeologists suspect part of the hill may have been a children's burial ground — one more reason to stay on the marked paths.
Allow 30–45 minutes. Morning and late afternoon give the best light; sunset is beautiful but busy. The hill lies within the Kazimierz Landscape Park, created in 1979 as the first landscape park in the Lublin region, and its grasslands are among the park's most valuable habitats.
Yes — it is the classic postcard view of Kazimierz Dolny and takes little time. Combine it with the castle next door.
Buses run from Lublin and from Puławy, the nearest train station. From the Market Square, walk a few minutes up Zamkowa Street. Drivers should use the official municipal car parks. Note that the nearby Korzeniowy Dół gorge has been closed until further notice in 2026, and the ferry to Janowiec did not run this season.
