Kazimierz Dolny, Lublin
From a grassy hill above Kazimierz Dolny you look out over a wide bend of the Vistula, the thatched roofs of Mięćmierz and, across the river, the village of Janowiec. Albrechtówka, once called Kamienna Góra (Stone Hill), combines one of the finest views of the Vistula gorge with a small mystery: among the trees stand the ruins of a villa linked to the sculptor Stanisław Szukalski. It is an easy outing from Kazimierz, best towards evening.
The Kazimierz Dolny municipality explains that the hill is named after a former owner of the land, a man called Albrecht. Around 1910, the Lublin engineer Jan Albrycht designed a villa here, first known as "Albrychtówka". When it changed hands in 1924, people began calling it "Szukałówka". Szukalski, one of the most original Polish sculptors of the 20th century, did not live here for long, and after the outbreak of the Second World War he settled permanently in California. The abandoned villa fell into ruin; according to the municipality, the Germans held local farmers there during the war.
From Albrechtówka you can clearly see the post windmill in Mięćmierz. It has not always stood here: it was moved from Bałtów near Puławy, just like some of the thatched cottages that give the village its open-air-museum feel. Mięćmierz used to be a settlement of Vistula raftsmen who ferried people and goods across the river to Janowiec. Since 2023, part of the riverside escarpment below has been protected as the Mięćmierz nature reserve.
From the centre of Kazimierz, walk along ul. Krakowska beside the Vistula towards the quarries; the path up Albrechtówka starts next to them. You can also come from Czerniawy along ul. Słoneczna or follow the riverbank to Mięćmierz. Allow 1.5–2 hours including the walk back and a break. The area is open, and the sources mention no fees. Paths are unpaved and steep in places, so a pushchair will struggle. The view is best at sunset over the Vistula and in spring, when the grasslands are in flower. Stay on the trodden paths, as the grassland is easily damaged.
