St. Stanislaus and St. Margaret Church in Janowiec

At the foot of Castle Hill in Janowiec, a few steps from the market square, stands the Church of St. Stanislaus and St. Margaret — a late-Renaissance temple of white limestone and brick, with the Firlej castle towering above it on the other side of the hill.

The Renaissance rebuilding

The church itself dates to the 16th century, but its present form is the result of a thorough rebuild in 1585–1600, after which the parish was re-erected through the foundation of Barbara Tarłowa née Dulska, starostine of Sochaczew. The church was consecrated in 1604, and in 1914 it was partially burned down. It is oriented, with Gothic remains legible in the older parts of the walls.

Details to look for inside

St. Anne's chapel is entered through a Gothic stone portal with carved inscriptions — the oldest legible one dates from 1558. Inside you will see valuable tomb sculptures and stuccowork, testimony to the church's rank among the residential foundations of the old Commonwealth.

Janowiec and the Vistula

Above the town rises the castle built in 1508–1526 by Mikołaj Firlej and continued by his son Piotr — its courtyard and the viewing terrace on the cloisters are worth a visit. Janowiec lies within the Puławy–Kazimierz Dolny–Nałęczów triangle, and a ferry crossing links it directly with Kazimierz Dolny, so the church fits naturally into an itinerary along both banks of the Vistula.
