Kazimierz Dolny, Lublin
The granaries of Kazimierz Dolny (pronounced roughly “ka-ZHEE-myesh DOL-nee”) are a striking set of 16th- and 17th-century stone warehouses on the Vistula River, built when this small town was a busy grain port. The best known is the Kobiałki Granary on Krakowska Street, with its tall Renaissance gable, but more stand along Puławska Street. A granary walk is one of the best things to do in Kazimierz Dolny once you have seen the crowded Market Square.
Kazimierz Dolny is a small riverside town in eastern Poland, about 50 km (30 miles) west of Lublin and roughly 2–2.5 hours’ drive from Warsaw. It is a classic weekend escape for Poles and a favorite of painters. There is no railway station in town; most visitors arrive by car or bus via Puławy or Lublin.
The town boomed in the 16th and early 17th centuries thanks to the grain trade down the Vistula to Gdańsk, then the gateway to Baltic and Western European markets. Merchant families such as the Przybyło, Czarnota and Celej built masonry granaries by the river to store grain before it was loaded onto barges. The Swedish invasion of 1656, further wars and the later partitions of Poland cut the town off from its markets. That economic standstill preserved Kazimierz’s Renaissance layout, which is now protected as a national Monument of History.
The Kobiałki Granary stands on Krakowska Street, at the western edge of town, about 1.3 km (0.8 miles) from the Market Square. It dates from 1636 and was rebuilt in 1954; it is a registered historic monument. Its name comes from the family that owned it in the 19th century. Look for the tall stepped gable with scrolls and pinnacles and the arcaded loggia on the front. Today it operates as a hotel, so the interior is not open to sightseers. Nearby on the same street stands the ruin of another early 17th-century granary – a telling contrast.
At the northern edge of town, along Puławska Street, you will find:
As of October 2026, viewing the granaries from the street is free year-round; most are hotels, a hostel or private property. Walk west along Krakowska Street to Kobiałki (15–20 minutes one way) and north along Puławska Street; allow 1.5–2 hours for both. The route follows flat sidewalks and is stroller-friendly. Check the Vistula Museum’s website for Natural History Museum hours and tickets. Prices in town are in złoty (PLN). Parking in the center fills up fast on weekends, so arrive early.
The Market Square with the Przybyło brothers’ townhouses, the parish church, the castle ruins and tower, Three Crosses Hill and the loess ravines around town.
