Kazimierz Dolny, Lublin
Every old townhouse, granary and wall in Kazimierz Dolny can be traced back to one place – the quarry on ul. Krakowska. The pale rock, known locally as opoka, was extracted from an open pit until the early 1980s. Once the quarry closed, its rim became one of the town's most popular viewpoints, with a panorama of the Vistula gorge and walls where you can find fossils some 100 million years old.
Quarrying went on for several centuries. According to the municipality, all of Kazimierz's historic buildings were made from this stone, but it also travelled further: to architectural details of the Dęblin fortress and to Warsaw's Kościuszko Embankment, built in the early 20th century. The stone was taken to river barges by an industrial narrow-gauge railway, which closed together with the quarry in the 1980s.
The municipality calls the rock either opoka or limestone, and the Late Cretaceous fossils in it give its age. The granaries on ul. Krakowska were built of the same stone, including the Kobiałka granary of 1636 (now a PTTK hotel).
