River Cruises in Kazimierz Dolny

From the deck of a boat Kazimierz Dolny looks quite different than from the market square: you see the high green slopes of the Lesser Poland Vistula Gorge, old quarries and the village of Mięćmierz right by the river. One-hour cruises leave the port in Kazimierz, head upstream and turn back at Krowia Wyspa (Cow Island) – a nature reserve protecting waterbirds. It is a relaxed way to see the valley after a walk around the market square and the hills.

The route

According to the operator, one-hour cruises run daily during the navigation season and last 60 minutes. The boat sails upstream past the old quarries and Mięćmierz, reaches Krowia Wyspa and returns to Kazimierz. On the way it passes through a section of the gorge where the Vistula valley is 1.5 to 3 km wide and its steep sides rise 60–70 m above the river. The whole gorge, which stretches for about 70 km from Zawichost to Puławy, is protected as a Natura 2000 site, and near Mięćmierz there is also a botanical nature reserve.

Boats used to stop on the opposite bank at the Janowiec landing (from there it is about 4 km on foot to the village centre and castle). The operator says this stop is temporarily suspended. On request it also runs Kazimierz – Puławy – Kazimierz cruises, which take about 3 hours there and back, depending on the water level.

The boats

The fleet consists of six large boats carrying 120 to 240 people – each with a buffet – plus a small vessel for 12. The operator's website lists, among others, the "Kazimierz Wielki", "Lew", "Marzanna", "Wiking", "Pirat", "Celina" and "Piast & Feniks". The "Kazimierz Wielki" is equipped for night cruises, and the large boats can be hired for banquets and group events.

Water levels and the ferry

The Vistula at Kazimierz can be unpredictable. In spring 2026 a local news site reported very low water and large sand deposits: the boats were running, but the Kazimierz – Janowiec ferry, launched on 8 June 1996, did not start its season for the May bank holiday. When the ferry runs, Janowiec is less than 5 km from Kazimierz market square; without it you have to drive via the bridge in Puławy – about 34 km.

The operator does not publish exact season dates or a timetable, so in spring and autumn – and when the water is extremely low or high – call before you come. The boats leave from the port in Kazimierz, on the Vistula below the town. A cruise is a good option for families with children and for anyone who would rather not climb the hills.
