Castles
Janowiec, Lublin
Janowiec Castle (say "yah-NOH-vyets") is a Renaissance magnate residence perched on a cliff above the Vistula River, directly across from the popular little town of Kazimierz Dolny in eastern Poland. Part ruin, part carefully rebuilt museum, it offers sweeping views over the river gorge, a small open-air display of wooden manor buildings, and a story that runs from Polish hetmans to Swedish invaders. In 2026 the castle celebrates its 500th anniversary, which makes it a timely side trip.
Janowiec lies in the Lublin region, on the left bank of the Vistula. The usual base is Kazimierz Dolny, about 150 km (roughly 2 hours by car) southeast of Warsaw and about 60 km from Lublin, which has the nearest airport. There is no train station in Kazimierz; the closest one is in Puławy.
In a normal year a small car ferry links Kazimierz with Janowiec in minutes. In the 2026 season the ferry did not run because the Vistula was too low; on summer weekends a boat shuttled pedestrians and cyclists instead. By car you must loop around via the bridge in Puławy, about 34 km. Check the latest local announcements before you go.
Construction began in the early 16th century under Mikołaj Firlej, Grand Hetman of the Crown from 1515. In 1526 his son Piotr turned the fortress into a comfortable residence, the date the museum uses for its jubilee. Between 1577 and 1587 Andrzej Firlej brought in the Italian architect Santi Gucci to design a new palace wing. Later owners, the Tarło and Lubomirski families, added Baroque and Rococo touches.
During the Swedish invasion known in Poland as "the Deluge", troops occupied and partly burned the castle in 1656. It was rebuilt, sold in 1778 to Mikołaj Piaskowski, and slowly abandoned in the 19th century. Unusually, from 1931 to 1975 the ruin belonged to a private owner, Leon Kozłowski, before passing to the state and the regional museum. Since 2025 it has been an independent institution, the Janowiec Castle Museum.
Note that the Northern House and the Moniaki manor are temporarily closed while new exhibitions are prepared, and the courtyard is undergoing restoration work.
As of October 2026, according to the museum:
Yes, if you are spending a day or more in Kazimierz Dolny. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the castle and park. The ruins have uneven stone surfaces and stairs, so visitors with limited mobility should contact the museum first. English information on site may be limited, so a translation app helps. Combine the visit with Kazimierz's market square, or with Puławy and its Czartoryski palace park on the way back.
