Ogrodzieniec Castle

Netflix chose these ruins for the Battle of Sodden in "The Witcher", Andrzej Wajda filmed "Revenge" (Zemsta) here, and in 1984 Iron Maiden recorded a film insert for "Hallowed Be Thy Name". Ogrodzieniec Castle in Podzamcze stands on the highest point of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland – Castle Hill (515.5 m above sea level) – it is the largest castle in Silesia and the most popular on the whole Trail of the Eagles' Nests. Its walls merge with limestone crags so seamlessly that they seem to grow straight out of the rock.

History: from wooden stronghold to "Little Wawel"

The first fortifications were built here under Bolesław III Wrymouth and were probably destroyed during the Tatar invasion of 1241. A stone castle was built by Casimir the Great, and in 1387 Władysław Jagiełło granted it to Włodek of Charbinowice – the Włodek family of the Sulima coat of arms held it for almost a century. High rocks protected it on three sides, and the entrance led through a narrow cleft between them.

The turning point came in the 16th century. In 1523 the castle passed as a pledge to Jan Boner, and in 1530–1545 Seweryn Boner turned the Gothic fortress into a Renaissance residence later compared with Wawel. In 1587 the castle was taken by the troops of Archduke Maximilian, a claimant to the Polish throne, and in 1655 the Swedes, who were stationed here for almost two years, partly burned it. Stanisław Warszycki, castellan of Kraków, rebuilt it in 1669–1680, but in 1702 another fire was started by the army of Charles XII. The last residents left the ruin around 1810. Conservation work carried out in 1949–1973 stabilised the castle as a permanent ruin.

What to see

• Limestone crags built into the walls – best seen from the courtyards and on a walk around the castle.
• The Credenza Tower (Baszta Kredencerska), included in the visitor route.
• The Hen's Foot (Kurza Stopa) – its lowest storey preserves fragments of Renaissance frescoes with a lily motif.
• The Torture Chamber – an exhibition included in the ticket.
• The chapel on the square in Podzamcze, built from castle elements; inside are a cannonball said to have hit the castle during the Swedish Deluge and a Renaissance statue of the Virgin Mary.

Curiosities

In the 1880s the writer Adolf Dygasiński was probably the first to call these ruins an "eagle's nest" – which gave the whole Land of the Eagles' Nests its name. After Aleksander Janowski visited Ogrodzieniec in 1906, the Polish Sightseeing Society was founded, and the outline of the ruins appeared on its badge. Since autumn 2021 the castle has been lit up after dark in winter (November to February) as the "Ogrodzieniec Fortress of Light".

Tripto tip

The castle is open all year, and visits follow a marked route. According to the price list valid from 1 January 2026, a standard ticket costs PLN 30, a reduced one PLN 21; a combined ticket with the reconstructed wooden stronghold on Birów Hill (1.5 km from the castle) costs PLN 38 and PLN 27. Allow 1–1.5 hours for the castle alone, half a day with Birów Hill. Wear comfortable shoes: the route involves stairs and uneven, rocky surfaces. After your visit, walk around the outside of the castle – only from there can you see how the walls fuse with the rocks.
