Zamek Ogrodzieniec

Ogrodzieniec Castle is a monumental Renaissance ruin on Góra Janowskiego in Podzamcze, surrounded by the limestone outcrops of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. It is one of the best-known sites on the Trail of the Eagles’ Nests.

From medieval stronghold to the “Little Wawel”

The first castle was built during the reign of King Casimir the Great. Between 1530 and 1545, Seweryn Boner transformed the earlier stronghold into a Renaissance residence later known as the “Little Wawel”. The castle changed owners and was expanded over time; its history is linked with the Włodek and Boner families.

Damage and ruins

In 1587 the castle was captured by the forces of Archduke Maximilian, and in 1655 it was partly burned by the Swedish army. Later rebuilding did not restore its former importance. Today, the surviving walls, towers, courtyards and rocks reveal the scale of the former residence. Look out for the high defensive wall and the tournament courtyard.

Visiting

The castle is open to visitors year-round for an admission fee, with sightseeing along a designated route. The official price list gives a standard ticket at PLN 30 and a reduced ticket at PLN 21; opening hours and prices may change, so check the castle’s website before travelling. Wear comfortable shoes because the route through the ruins and limestone rocks has uneven surfaces.

Tripto tip: leave time to walk around the castle from the rock side as well as exploring the ruins. This is where the relationship between the stronghold and the Jurassic landscape is easiest to appreciate.
