Fortress of Light at Ogrodzieniec

Since 4 November 2021, when it was officially opened, the ruins of Ogrodzieniec Castle in Podzamcze turn after dark into the Ogrodzieniec Fortress of Light — an open-air illumination spectacle spread over several winter months. The setting needs no introduction: the stronghold raised in the 14th–15th century by the Włodek Sulimczyk family is the largest castle of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland and a gem of the Trail of the Eagles' Nests, also known from "The Witcher" series.

Lights and legends

A glowing gate operates on the outer bailey, mirrors light up the courtyard, and the whole castle glows in uniform blue. The scenes come alive with halberdiers climbing the castle — a favourite photo motif. The figures evoke castle legends: a racing carriage with horses, an executioner, the White Lady and the black dog on a chain, symbol of the evil Lord Warszycki. On weekends the Fire Theatre warms up the bailey, and New Year's Eve gains a fireworks show.

Practical notes

In the winter season the Fortress runs Monday to Friday 15:30–19:00, Saturdays until 21:00, Sundays until 20:00. A regular ticket costs PLN 29, a reduced one PLN 23, children under 5 enter free. The ruins can also be visited by day, 11:00–15:30 (PLN 19 / 13). There are many stairs inside and the site is not adapted for pushchairs; car parks are run by local hosts.
