Hot-air balloon flight over the Polish Jura

From a balloon basket the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland looks like a scale model: limestone outcrops, valleys and the ruined castles of the Trail of the Eagles' Nests form a single map. The most recognisable landmark around Podzamcze is the ruin of Ogrodzieniec Castle, set on Castle Hill (515.5 m above sea level), the highest point of the Jura. A balloon flight, however, is not something you can book by the hour – the weather decides whether, and from where, you take off.

The balloon festival at Ogrodzieniec

Balloons became a fixture of the summer calendar here thanks to the Baloniada at Ogrodzieniec Castle. The second edition took place on 18–19 August 2023 and, according to the organisers, drew more than 10,000 spectators; the programme included parachute displays, aerobatics by an ultralight plane and paramotors, and a fire show with pyrotechnics. What a flight is like

A hot-air balloon has no rudder – the pilot does not choose a course but flies with the wind, rising and descending with the propane burners. You stand in the basket, and the flight usually lasts 45–60 minutes; the whole outing, including the briefing, inflating the envelope, landing in open country and returning to the launch site, takes 2–3 hours. The pilot picks the landing spot during the flight, usually a field or meadow, and a ground crew follows by car to collect the passengers.

The weather has the final say

In summer balloonists take off at dawn or before sunset, when the air is calmest. Operators require no storms or precipitation and only light wind – sightseeing-flight rules commonly set a limit of under 4 m/s and a cloud base above 200 m. As commander, the pilot can cancel at any stage, and a cancelled launch is the rule rather than the exception. Depending on the wind, the final launch site is often fixed only the day before or on the day itself.

Book a flight with flexible dates and keep a few spare days – operators' tickets and vouchers usually have a validity period within which a launch can be rescheduled. Dress in layers, wear trainers and bring a hat (the burners radiate heat from above); heels and flip-flops are out. Check the pilot's licence and the operator's experience. Combine the flight with a visit to the ruins of Ogrodzieniec Castle, which are open to visitors.
