The Tricity (Trójmiasto) is three neighbouring cities strung along the Bay of Gdańsk and linked by a single SKM commuter rail line. Gdańsk has the Hanseatic Main Town, huge brick churches and some of Poland's most important museums of 20th-century history. Sopot is the seaside resort with the long wooden pier, the pedestrian Monte Cassino street and a wide sandy beach. Gdynia, the youngest of the three, is a port city with the Aquarium on the South Pier and a cliff-backed beach in Orłowo. The trains between them take from a few minutes to around half an hour, so one day is enough for a taste of all three.
Below you will find our ten picks from across the Tricity, a one-day and a two-day itinerary, transport tips, advice for the 2026/27 autumn and winter season and a full list of attractions you can filter by town. Most museums are in Gdańsk, so check closing days: as of October 2026, the Gdańsk Museum branches and the European Solidarity Centre exhibition are closed on Tuesdays, while the Museum of the Second World War, the National Museum and the National Maritime Museum are closed on Mondays. The Hel Peninsula is not covered here; it has a separate regional guide.
The region brings together attractions from these towns. Open a town guide or its list of attractions.

By air: Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport is about 12 km northwest of central Gdańsk. PKM trains leave from the terminal and connect with the SKM line, for example at Gdańsk Wrzeszcz, from where you can reach Gdańsk Główny as well as Sopot and Gdynia.
By train: long-distance trains stop at Gdańsk Główny, Sopot and Gdynia Główna, so you can base yourself in any of the three cities.
Between the cities: the SKM commuter line runs the length of the Tricity. Gdańsk Główny to Sopot takes about 20 minutes and to Gdynia Główna about 35 minutes. Useful stops include Gdańsk Stocznia (European Solidarity Centre), Gdańsk Oliwa (cathedral), Sopot (Monte Cassino street) and Gdynia Orłowo (pier and cliff). Parking is paid in all three city centres and hard to find in Sopot in summer, so the train is usually easier than a car.
City guides: things to do in Gdańsk, Sopot, Gdynia.
Summer is beach season: in 2026 Sopot's lifeguarded beaches operated from 27 June to 30 August (the Southern Baths I beach from 13 June to 13 September), and St Dominic's Fair in Gdańsk ran from 25 July to 16 August. That is when the Royal Route, Monte Cassino street and the pier are busiest and the Sopot pier charges for entry. May, June and September usually bring decent weather with fewer people.
Autumn and winter 2026/27 are for museums and empty beaches. Both the Sopot and Orłowo piers are free in this period. The Sopot lighthouse opens 10:00–16:00 from October to December and 11:00–16:00 in January and February (hours may change in bad weather). The Sopot hillfort is open 10:00–16:00 from November to March, except Mondays. Wisłoujście Fortress is closed in winter, and at the Museum of the Second World War individual sections close temporarily for works (sections 4 and 5 from 2 to 9 November, section 6 from 30 November to 7 December). Many museums close on 1 November and 24–26 December; see each listing for details.
The bay is windy all year, and the end of a pier is always colder than the beach, so bring an extra layer even in summer.
One day covers the Royal Route in Gdańsk, an afternoon in Sopot and sunset in Orłowo. Two days let you add a major museum, Westerplatte or the European Solidarity Centre, Oliwa and the Gdynia Aquarium. If you want to see several museums properly, plan three days.
The SKM commuter train is the easiest way. Gdańsk Główny to Sopot takes about 20 minutes and to Gdynia Główna about 35 minutes. For Oliwa Cathedral get off at Gdańsk Oliwa, and for the pier and cliff in Gdynia at Gdynia Orłowo.
Gdańsk is the best base for sightseeing, as most monuments and museums are in or near the Main Town. Sopot suits you if you want to be close to the beach and the pier. With the SKM line you can reach the other two cities from any of them without a car.
As of October 2026, the Museum of the Second World War, the National Museum, the National Maritime Museum, the State Art Gallery in Sopot and the Sopot hillfort are closed on Mondays. The Gdańsk Museum branches, including the Town Hall, Artus Court and the Amber Museum, and the European Solidarity Centre exhibition are closed on Tuesdays. On Tuesdays entry is free at the Museum of the Second World War and the Sopot hillfort.
Only in season. In 2026 tickets were charged from 10 April to 30 September (10 zł standard, 5 zł reduced). In autumn and winter entry is free. The Orłowo pier in Gdynia is free all year.
The Gdynia Aquarium with 76 tanks, the Amber Museum with insects trapped in amber, the Sołdek steamship of the Maritime Museum, the Hevelianum science centre on Gradowa Hill, the open-air hillfort in Sopot and the fairy-tale Crooked House. The flat Sopot pier is fine with a pushchair.
No. The Hel Peninsula, with Władysławowo, Jastarnia and Hel, has its own regional guide. This guide covers Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia only.
