Dar Młodzieży

Dar Młodzieży is an active three-masted sail training ship operated by Gdynia Maritime University. For visitors, it is mainly a landmark to view from the waterfront; it is not a permanent museum with daily visiting hours. Built at the Gdańsk Shipyard, it was commissioned under the Polish flag on 4 July 1982 and continues the tradition of the training ships Lwów and Dar Pomorza.

A working training ship

The frigate is 108.8 m long including the bowsprit, 14 m wide and has a displacement of about 2,946 tonnes. Its three masts reach up to 49.5 m. Students and maritime-school pupils use the ship for sea training, learning watchkeeping, navigation and life on board. Its working role matters more than a conventional exhibition.

Voyages and maritime heritage

In 1987–1988, Dar Młodzieży completed a round-the-world voyage via the three great capes and passed Cape Horn. In 1997, she won Class A at Osaka Sail ’97. UMG’s official summary records 273 voyages and calls at 860 ports between 1982 and 2025. For a fuller museum visit, combine the ship with Dar Pomorza, the historic vessel preserved in Gdynia; they are separate attractions.

Visiting

There are no permanent opening hours or guaranteed access to the deck. The ship spends much of its time at sea, and schedules can change because of training voyages or repairs. Public boarding is announced for selected open days and tall-ship events, so check the latest UMG news and the event organiser before travelling. Otherwise, view Dar Młodzieży from Gdynia’s waterfront and confirm that the ship is in port.
