The State Art Gallery in Sopot (PaĆstwowa Galeria Sztuki, PGS) is one of the leading contemporary art venues in northern Poland, housed in the Spa House on Spa Square â just steps from the entrance to the famous Sopot pier. Its roughly 1,200 mÂČ (13,000 sq ft) of exhibition space hosts a constantly changing program of temporary shows, from modern classics to emerging artists. It is the perfect rainy-day plan in Sopot and a different side of the resort beyond the beach.
Sopot (say "SO-pot") is the spa town between GdaĆsk and Gdynia, together known as the Tricity. The gallery has existed since 1952, first as a branch of the state Central Bureau of Art Exhibitions and later as an independent exhibition bureau. Until a fire in 1980 it occupied wooden pavilions on the Monciak promenade. It took its current name in 1992 and is run and funded by the city of Sopot. After the town center was rebuilt, it moved into the new Spa House (Dom Zdrojowy), which opened in 2009 on the site of the original spa house destroyed in 1945.
PGS has shown work by Joseph Beuys, Frank O. Gehry, Alfred Kubin, Bruno Schulz, Roman CieĆlewicz and LĂĄszlĂł Moholy-Nagy, and has hosted GĂŒnter Grass and Nobel laureate CzesĆaw MiĆosz. In 2017 the Polish weekly "Polityka" ranked it third among the country's contemporary art galleries.
There is no permanent collection display; exhibitions change every few weeks or months. In fall 2026:
